Various Combinations Of In Situ And Ex Situ Remediation Techniques
In the presence of large volumes of contaminated soil or groundwater, major air and underground obstacles and complex geologic and hydrogeologic conditions, Technisol Environment is able to implement carry out remediation programs integrating various in situ and ex situ treatment techniques.
For large-scale remediation projects, feasibility studies including treatability studies are conducted prior to preparing plans and specifications. In addition to evaluating the technical feasibility, the studies are used to determine the remediation time and to establish the guaranteed treatment program offered by Technisol Environment. Every remediation project carried out involves a major monitoring program, with a view to optimizing treatment.
The in situ and ex situ techniques used by Technisol Environment include bioflushing, biosparging, bioextraction, bioventing, volatilization, thermal desorption and passive biodegradation. In recent years, Technisol Environment has carried out over 50 medium- and large-scale soil and groundwater remediation projects involving in situ and ex situ treatment techniques.
The integration of a combination of in situ and ex situ remediation techniques has several advantages: (1) the presence of infrastructure does not pose constraints; (2) the work can be carried out in situ despite heterogeneous geologic conditions; (3) contaminants can be degraded rather than just moved; and (4) the most cost-effective solutions can be adopted.
Mobile Pumping And Treatment Unit
Technisol Environnement has designed and brought on-line mobile units for the treatment of water contaminated with light hydrocarbons. The concept and effectiveness of the units has been formally recognized by the Quebec Department of Environment and Wildlife (MEF), and by the Montreal Urban Community. The units have been pre-approved for use throughout Quebec, without restrictions and without the need to obtain a certificate of authorization.
The main advantage of the mobile unit is that it can be used directly at the site for short-term treatments. It can be used for a wide variety of applications, including:
treatment of wash water inside former petroleum storage tanks; pumping out an excavation, in which the water is contaminated, in order to allow work to continue; treatment of all water contaminated with hydrocarbons and recovered inside a storage tank; hydrogeological pumping tests at a site where the groundwater is contaminated.
The mobile treatment unit has proven to be very effective in all projects in which it has been used. Conclusive results have been obtained, with compliance with the applicable release criteria or standards, at operating capacities of between 130 and 250 litres/min, with BTEX, PAH and C10-C50 petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in the raw water that are sometimes well in exceedance of the authorized release criteria.
The main advantages of our units are as follows: immediate action can be taken in an emergency situation in full compliance with the law, without first having to obtain the traditional certificate of authorization; its costs are very competitive, compared to those of firms that use vacuum trucks; the environmental problem can be managed directly at the source, therefore avoiding any risk associated with the transportation of contaminated substances; possibility of carrying out turn-key projects.
