Company Overview

Stressgen is a public biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of innovative stress protein- based immunotherapeutics. The Company is developing a broad range of products for the treatment of viral infections and related cancers, such as anal dysplasia, genital warts, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. In addition to targeting HPV-related diseases, the Company also has a program to evaluate stress protein fusions in hepatitis B and has initiated research studies to evaluate its heat shock protein technology in the treatment of several other indications such as HIV and herpes.

Stressgen is an internationally recognized supplier of research products used by scientists worldwide for the study of cellular stress, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and neurobiology.

Technology Profile:

Heat shock proteins, also known as stress proteins, are present in cells of all organisms from bacteria to mammals. Stressgen capitalizes upon the immunostimulatory powers of Hsp by fusing, or covalently linking, a stress protein with an antigen to create a single hybrid molecule designed to trigger the immune system to recognize that antigen. Scientists believe that the Hsp portion of the fusion molecule directs the molecule to antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells. This in turn generates a CD8+ CTL immune response against the antigen to which the Hsp is fused. CTLs are programmed to survey the body for the presence of diseased cells bearing the antigen and eradicate them, while bypassing normal cells. Since the targeting antigen can be chosen from a wide variety of sources, the spectrum of human disease that potentially can be treated by Hsp fusions technology is vast and encompasses infectious diseases and cancers.
