Aboriginal Affairs Consulting

Business - Aboriginal Relations Negotiation Many relationships in the aboriginal affairs field require agreements among the participants. Sometimes these understandings are between two parties; at other times more parties are involved. We have extensive experience in the many dimensions of negotiated agreements, such as: Federal/Provincial cost-sharing, including treaty cost-sharing. Protocol agreements between government and aboriginal organizations, among aboriginal organizations and between businesses and aboriginal organizations. Treaty negotiations, including treaty tables in the BC treaty process, the Nisgaa Treaty and land claim negotiations with the Labrador Inuit and Labrador Innu. Delegation Enabling Agreements for aboriginal child and family service agencies. Facilitation Facilitating meetings and discussions has been a big part of our practice in recent years. As Executive Director of the BC Treaty Commission, Dave supervised professional staff facilitating individual treaty negotiation tables, provided expert advice to Commissioners and the Chief Commissioner and directly facilitated meetings among the Senior Officials of governments and First Nations. Through his firm, Dave has facilitated a number of processes for clients, including: Organizational Strategic Review for BC Hydros Aboriginal Relations Department. Governance Workshops for the Mtis Provincial Council of BC, from which he developed the Constitution of the Mtis Nation (British Columbia). A Consultation Strategy for the Musqueam First Nation. First Nation consultations for BC Hydro, including the development of consultation strategies and leading First Nation consultation and accommodation on major projects. Strategy Development The third major area of our practice is the development of strategies for clients. This key function has taken different forms, including: A strategy for interaction with the provincial government on aboriginal matters. Strategies on the Social Union and the Fiscal Relations Initiative were done under sub-contract for the Assembly of First Nations. A strategy was developed on innovative means to secure resources for the Manitoba Aboriginal Justice Implementation Commission. A series of strategies for the productive engagement of First Nations, the federal and provincial governments, companies and non-governmental organizations. A Treaty Negotiation Strategy for the Business Council of British Columbia. Mentoring and Coaching Our most recent offering to clients is Mentoring and Coaching. Businesses, for example, will sometimes be faced with aboriginal issues. They will have staff who can attend to the issues, but are unsure about how to proceed or lack experience in this field. We offer clients blocks of our professional time where we would meet with staff and help them brainstorm and problem solve. Mentoring and Coaching can help a client deal with new issues as well as increase the capacity of their staff in aboriginal matters. Mentoring and Coaching sessions can be on an as needed basis or be held on a set schedule. Please contact Dave for further information on this new program.
