Smiths Detection
Smiths Detection (formerly Barringer) is the world's leading
supplier of trace detection equipment for explosives and
narcotics. There are several thousand IONSCAN instruments in
use with law enforcement and security agencies in 68 countries
around the world. In 1999, Barringer introduced the hand-held
Sabre 2000, the worlds smallest, lightest and most economical
vapour and particle detector for drugs, explosives, and chemical
warfare agents. In 2001, the Sentinel II walk through portal for
detection explosives and narcotics was introduced. Over 90% of
the Company's trace detection production is exported, and the
company has offices in USA, UK, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Smiths Detection also has extensive research and development
experience, and has been and is currently working on major
government research contracts for the application of ion
mobility spectrometry as well as in the field of narcotics and
explosives detection.
Environmental Profile
Products/Services: detection of narcotics, expolosives, chemical weapons, toxic industrial chemicals for Aviation Security, Facilities Security and Military Security. Company Description: Smiths Detection is the formation of three companies: Barringer Limited, Graseby Dynamics and ETG. Barringer, founded in 1961, is a high-technology instrument manufacturer, and research and development company. It is the world's leading supplier of trace detection equipment for explosives and narcotics. The company joined with Smiths Detection, a subsidiary of Smiths Aerospace in 2002. Smiths Detection has offices in Canada (Toronto), USA, England, France and Malaysia.
Smiths Detection currently exports a wide range of trace detection products and services to the law enforcement, security and military markets throughout the world. The company is also pursuing applications in the life science, environmental and pharmaceutical markets.

Ionscan Explosives/Narcotics Detection System
The IONSCAN is a non-invasive trace chemical detector which
effectively detects explosives and narcotics, whether concealed
in luggage, parcels or cargo, as traces on people or documents,
or in other security applications. It utilizes advanced ion
mobility spectrometry techniques to detect even low vapour
pressure compounds such as plastic explosives and narcotic
hydrochlorides.
Samples are conveniently collected by swiping or vacuuming
suspected items or surfaces with small handheld samplers,
allowing flexible access to remote or difficult areas. Analysis
in the detector unit is fast (less than eight seconds), and
results are immediately displayed. Up to 45 compounds can be
programmed into the IONSCAN for simultaneous detection, and
found substances are identified by name, enabling immediate,
optimum responses by the users. The hand-held Sabre 2000,
introduced in 1999, is the world's smallest, lightest and most
economical vapour and particle detector for drugs, explosives,
and chemical warfare agents. Customized units, such as the
Document Scanner and the GC/IONSCAN, are also available for
special applications. The IONSCAN Remote Monitoring system
allows Barringer support staff to monitor the performance and
status of an IONSCAN system anywhere in the world
IONSCANs are proven, rugged, easily transportable, low
maintenance instruments that are simple to operate and offer
exceptional value to users.
Heavy Water Analyzer
Ionscan - Drug & Explosives Detection Unit
Ionscan Ion Mobility Spectrometer Analysis System.
The IONSCAN ion mobility spectrometer, originally developed for the detection of traces of concealed explosives and illicit narcotics, has very high selectivity and sensitivity for pentachlorophenol and other chlorinated phenols. It utilizes advanced ion mobility spectrometry techniques to effectively detect even low vapour pressure compounds such as plastic explosives and narcotic hydrochlorides.
Samples are conveniently collected by swiping or vacuuming suspected items or surfaces with small hand held samplers, allowing flexible access to remote or difficult areas. Analysis in the detector unit requires only minimal sample preparation and is extremely fast (less than eight seconds), and results are immediately displayed. Target compounds are detected by ions produced from them which possess characteristic drift times in an electric field. Up to 45 Channels can be programmed into the IONSCAN for simultaneous detection, and found substances are identified by name, to enable immediate responses by the users. The IONSCAN is proven to be a rugged, easily transportable, low maintenance instrument that is simple to operate and offers exceptional value to its users.
