School for Resource and Environmental Studies

The School for Resource and Environmental Studies (SRES),
Dalhousie University, was established in 1973 to to provide
interdisciplinary research on problems of significance in
Canada and abroad and to teach natural resource management and
environmental studies.

The School now offers two graduate programs: The Master of
Environmental Studies (MES) and the Master of Resource and
Environmental Management (MREM). The graduate programs
emphasize interactions between social and natural sciences
necessary for resolving complex environmental and resource
management problems.

SRES has been involved in international development with
environmental management projects in Indonesia, the
Philippines, China and the Caribbean. It has conducted various
training programs and workshops for environmental professionals
from countries around the world.

SRES faculty members, numbering six fulltime Dalhousie
University professors, about 12 cross-appointed Dalhousie
professors, 22 adjunct professors from other universities and
8 honorary research associates, undertake a very wide range of
scholarly projects in their teaching, research, developing,
consulting and advising activities. Prominent themes in SRES'
current research and development activities include industrial
ecology (cleaner production), environmental management systems,
biodiversity conservation, protected areas, sustainable forest
management, ecological economics, environmental impact
assessment, community sustainability, and climate change.

Located at SRES is the Atlantic Regional Office of the Canadian
Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN). The
focus of C-CIARN is to facilitate research into the potential
impacts of climate change on Canada and the development of
adaptation strategies to best deal with these impacts. C-CIARN
Atlantic is a network of researchers and stakeholders throughout
the Atlantic provinces interested in impacts and adaptation
issues.
