Air Quality Impact Assessment.
For new and existing waste treatment and disposal facilities, surface mining and quarrying operations, and complex industrial facilities, emissions can be released from stacks, vents, fugitive sources, area sources and on-site vehicles involved in the operations and transportation of materials. An impact assessment of these emissions permits evaluation of compliance with standards and guidelines to be made by estimating the potential short term, long term and cumulative effect on human and non-human receptors. Where standards are not available, ecological and human health risk estimates can be made.
The components of an air quality impact assessment include: cost-effectiveness of controls, and recommendations; dispersion modelling; emission estimates; emission inventory for processes and operation; expert testimony; process evaluation; regulatory compliance assessment; report preparation and presentation; sampling/monitoring; selection of control technology alternatives.
Waste Audits.
We have developed and implemented a standard, cost-effective approach to assisting industrial, commercial and institutional sectors and municipalities in complying with 3Rs regulations and reducing waste management costs. In addition to conducting waste audits, developing waste reduction work plans and designing source separation programs, SENES offers a number of support services including: providing assistance in conducting audit programs; waste management program communication; training and development of environmental management systems (ISO 14000); and workshops and seminars to increase waste management awareness. Our experience in waste management has shown that, by working closely with clients to fully understand their operations, significant economic benefits can result.
Ea For Mining, Infrastructure And Industrial Projects.
Over the past two decades, governments, the private sector, and the general public have come to accept and expect the assessment of environmental concerns as a component of rational planning and decision-making. Whether assigned specific definitions or used interchangeably as synonyms, terms such as environmental assessment (EA), impact assessment (EIA), and statement (EIS) often encompass the preparation of reports that provide a description of a project, a description of existing environmental conditions, an analysis of the possible effects the project could have on the environment, a presentation of the proposed mitigating measures, and a statement of residual adverse effects. Such documents may be reviewed by regulatory agencies, specialized technical agencies, or a public review board. SENES Consultants Limited (SENES) has prepared environmental assessment documents for many types of projects and appeared at environmental hearings and boards of inquiry across Canada and internationally. SENES has the capability to assess baseline environmental conditions and project impacts for various environmental components including those related to air quality, noise, water quality, soil quality, and radioactivity. In addition, senior staff frequently are called upon to co-ordinate the activities of other team participants, edit documents, provide advice to legal counsel, and present evidence at hearings and inquiries.
Site Specific Risk Assessment.
Human health and ecological risk assessment are performed for contaminated properties or for contaminant releases from the properties (routine or accidental). Risks are routinely assessed for radioactive compounds and organic and inorganic contaminants. Risk assessment services include: accident evaluations; development of risk based clean up criteria; environmental fate and exposure modelling; expert testimony; quantitative uncertainty/sensitivity analysis; risk based priorities assessment; screening level assessments or detailed modelling of ecological risk; screening level or detailed quantitative assessments of dose and human health risk.
Assessment, Investigation, Modelling And Treatment Of Acid Mine Drainage Problems And Design Of The First Engineered Barrier.
The control of acid mine drainage (AMD) from tailings areas and acid rock drainage (ARD) from waste rock is widely recognized as the most serious environmental issue facing many mine operators today. SENES has extensive experience in the assessment of AMD and ARD from reactive mine tailings and waste rock. The experience includes: extensive literature reviews of the factors affecting the biochemical oxidation of sulphide minerals; detailed laboratory investigations of oxidation mechanisms; field investigations of the aqueous, gaseous and solid phase components of tailings and waste rock piles; development of state-of-the-art (computer) models for evaluating acid generation processes and rates; investigation of processes for treatment of acidic seepage and runoff water; and, evaluation of strategies for decommissioning waste management facilities to minimize long-term environmental effects.
SENES has also completed several 'state of the art' reviews for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage (MEND) program.
A 50 header tailing pond is being decommissioned by American Barrick. The basin contains high sulphur reactive tailings and will be a major environmental liability. Under the existing design proposal the basin will require long term treatment. SENES was retained to evaluate closure options to determine if a low maintenance option could be cost-effectively implemented. The study completed included the following tasks: demonstrated that an engineered cap using a multi level barrier of sand, clean tailings and sand would reduce acid production by about a factor of 100; demonstrated that total costs for engineered cover are less than other options and that the option was environmentally superior; developed and verified an acid generation model for gold mine tailings; undertook detailed physical and chemical characterization of tailings; used the model to evaluate decommissioning and reclamation options.
Greenhouse Gas Inventory And Reduction Technology Implementation
We have responded to the climate change issue with a number of interesting projects. One of our most innovative approaches relates to the establishment of a greenhouse gas inventory and the implementation of technologies to reduce greenhouse gases in a variety of industries. Drawing upon the knowledge of atmospheric chemists and meteorologists, and state-of-the-art modelling and forecasting, SENES begins by developing a greenhouse gas baseline emission scenario and an estimate of the total impact of reduced products. Once completed, in-house engineers and scientists can:
-colect background information on industries;
-undertake technology assessments through facility audits;
-develop and implement an air emissions monitoring program;
-recommend and assist in the design of technology improvements to reduce greenhouse gases.
To complete the cycle of assistance, SENES can also:
-provide training on air quality, environmental assessment, risk assessment and technology;
-provide on-going assistance with implementation.
This unique approach has been used for a number of Canadian industries and governments as well as internationally in areas such as Poland, Serbia, the Carribbean, Guyana, and the United States.
