In 1947, Montreal was chosen as the site of the new business venture, Rolls-Royce Canada Limited, to perform maintenance on the Merlin engines for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) and the Royal Canadian Air Force's Air Transport command.
Celebrating 50 years of operation in 1997 today Rolls-Royce Canada is recognised as one of the top North-American maintenance bases. In a recent survey of the readers of the well-known American magazine, Professional Pilot, Rolls-Royce Canada was voted the Number One Turbine Engine Overhaul Base in North America.
Rolls-Royce Canada provides service for more than 123 different engines, including some of the most technologically advanced Roll-Royce engines powering the world's largest and most recent aircraft in use by commercial airlines as well as corporated and military operators.
Rolls-Royce Canada Limited is also involved in the repair and assembly of Rolls-Royce industrial gas turbine engines. In 1997, the company was designated the worldwide new production assembly and test centre for all large Rolls-Royce aero-derivative industrial RB211 and the 50 MW industrial Trent.
The facilities in Lachine, adjacent to Montreal International Airport at Dorval, have grown along with the business and today encompass some 520, 000 square feet, including five state-of-the-art test cells and the latest in component refurbishment technology, The workforce currently stands at some 1, 100 people, drawn primarily from the highly educated and technically specialised manpower available in the greater Montreal region.
