Coiled tubing drilling - In late 1998, the Company introduced its second generation coiled tubing drilling rig. Plains Energy's coiled tubing drilling utilizes a patented injection system substantially more cost-effective and technically superior to that of conventional injection systems. All conventional methods allow for limited directional and horizontal drilling opportunities from existing wellbores, while the Plains Energy system represents the only effective grossroots drilling method capable of spudding wells from surface to as deep as 1, 500 metres.
Plains Energy's system significantly extends the pipe life for coiled tubing drilling purposes, and facilitates drilling speeds 2 to 3 times faster than conventional drilling methods. The injection system utilizes significantly fewer moving parts than conventional coiled tubing injectors, rendering it inherently more reliable and durable.
Casing Inspection Tool - Plains Energy has consistently delivered cost-effective, efficient wireline services to the cased hole market. Through the introduction of the digital casing inspection tool in 1999, the Company anticipates further expanding its market presence. As one of only three providers of casing inspection services capable of measuring inside and outside wellbore defects in the world, the Company is poised to capture a substantial share of the abandonment market. A growing proportion of wells pending abandonment require casing inspection services, and with a growing inventory of operating wells throughout North America, the Company remains poised to capitalize substantially on this growing market.
Gemini Surface Control - Introduced in 1998, the Company is continuing the development of its capabilities in respect of underbalanced drilling surface control. Since its introduction the Gemini system has quickly penetrated the underbalanced surface control market and maintained significant utilization. With an anticipated 20-25% growth rate in underbalanced drilling over the next several years throughout North America, and a patent-pending process, Plains Energy considers superior to its competitors, the Company is poised to expand its position in this market as well.
