Pivotal Power Inc
Pivotal Power Inc. (formerly KB Electronics Ltd), located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, a division of ESSI, was established in 1979. Pivotal Power a world leader in the design and manufacture of a complete line of fully hardened and ruggedized static power conversion equipment in the 100W to 100kW range. The company is currently embarking on an aggressive growth strategy that will launch the company into new markets such as fuel cell power conversion and distributed power genereation.
Our business approach is focused on strong customer partnerships; the design and manufacture of reliable and affordable products, and product development support that ensures that our equipment fully integrates with other system components.
Our team includes experienced managers, professional mechanical and electronic design engineers, software/firmware developers, quality assurance specialists, manufacturing engineers, and skilled fabrication and assembly personnel. The company invests significantly in research and development initiatives and maintains a well equipped in-house test facility, including a random axis vibration table, environmental chambers, and an EMI/EMC chamber.
Pivotal Power's integrated manufacturing operations support a wide range of fabrication and electronic assembly capabilities such as metal fabrication, plating and painting, and assembly. Manufacturing processes, including materials management and product configuration, are strictly controlled and have been developed to meet the stringent demands of our military customers.
Pivotal Power's products include uninterruptible power supplies, static frequency converters, helicopter starters, inverters, embedded power supplies, and intelligent battery management systems. Products are designed and qualified to survive extreme operating environments demanded of military or high-end commercial applications.
We have the privilege of participating in many major programs and providing equipment and services on an ongoing basis to customers such as the Canadian Department of National Defense, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Raytheon, Lear Astronics, Computing Devices Canada, CAE Electronics and most of the major shipyards in North America.

Rectifiers
Pivotal Power's rectifier power supply (RPS) produces precise output power to comply with the system requirements of MIL-P-15736 specification for critical shipboard applications.
The power conversion of the RPS is based on switch mode technology using high-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) which provides excellent DC output voltage regulation with low transients.
Static Fequency Converter
Pivotal Power's frequency converter (SFC) converts input power to a high-quality output power for critical naval shipboard applications.
The power conversion of the SFC is based on switch mode technology using high-frequency pulse-width modulation regulated
using a microprocessor based system which provides a high
precision regulation and a very fast transient response.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Pivotal Power's uninterruptible power supply (UPS) produces precise output power to comply with the stringent system requirements of STANAG 1008 spec. for critical naval shipboard
applications.
In the event of loss of input power, the UPS is capable of supplying the rated output power for 15 minutes minimum, using internal batteries, with no transient interruptions.
Battery Management Systems
Pivotal Power's intelligent battery management system for use in tactical environments. This new generation equipment incorporates a microprocessor which identifies the individual requirements for up to 8 batteries and automatically supplies each with the required charging current This intelligent system ensures that all batteries are charged quickly and safely with minimal operator intervention.
The BMS also incorporates analyzing and reconditioning capabilities which facilitate optimization of battery life.
Embedded Power Supplies
Pivotal Power's embedded power supplies provide conditioned power and/or multiple output rail voltages to supply critical electronic systems in military applications.
The circuit design of the EPS is based on state-of-the-art power conversion technology using a prudent mixture of switch-mode and linear techniques aimed at maximizing power conversion density, efficiency and electromagnetic compatibility.
