Pacific Institute for Advanced Study
The Pacific Institute for Advanced Study is a leading R&D
organization. The Institute offers a broad range of
technological solutions to its clients including contaminated
site remediation, odour control biofilters, environmental
engineering, solar engineering, alternate energy
technology and Internet consulting. More details can be obtained

Environmental Profile
The Environmental Sciences Group of PIAS has a broad spectrum of technical capabilities in contaminant characterization, environmental management services, air pollution control using advanced technology biofiltration, innovative soil washing technologies, design and construction of biopiles and biofilters, site and ground water bioremediation, environmental policy and planning, and computer simulation of area migration of contaminants including free phase light hydrocarbons, multi-component organic liquids, dissolved transport in unconfined aquifers and estimating hydrocarbon recovery by in situ vacuum extraction.
The Institute does not maintain any full time laboratories for its research but leases suitable research and development facilities for the duration of the project. Quick test laboratories are available for small to moderate sized experiments that require rapid facility set up. In house facilities include CAD systems, advanced computer modelling and graphics facilities, an Internet Web Site, satellite communication, an extensive paper and electronic technical library and extensive intelligent data bases that allow information to be rapidly sourced.
The Institute is a world leader in the development and commercialization of climate change reduction/cleaner production technologies such as solar, wind, microhydroelectric and biomass energy systems. It provides services/technologies to many sectors of the global economy including oil/gas, mining, forestry, agriculture, aquaculture, transportation and all three levels of government. Using its Web site at: A HREF = 'http://www.sway.com/~pacific'http://www.sway.com/~pacific , the Institute continues to develop E-Commerce tools to conduct business with its clients throughout the world.

Research & Development
The Pacific Institute is one of Canada's leading independant
research and development organizations. The Institute conducts
contract R & D for a diverse range of clients around the globe.
See the Institute's web page for details of the on-going areas of
research within the various groups within the Pacific Instiute.
Environmental Products And Services
Advanced In Situ Bioremediation
We have developed technology for the bioremediation of sites contaminated with gasoline, creosote, solvents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons, aromatics, PCP, TCP, diesels, pesticides, herbicides and heavy fuel oils.
High technology on-site bioremediation developed by PIAS is a cost-effective remedial option. Comparisons between the various remedial options, given as a cost per cubic metre are as follows: incineration, including removal and haulage costs - $1,000/m3; landfill, including excavation, haulage and tipping fees - $250/m3; solidification/stabilization with storage at a separate site - $160/m3; on-site soil washing, with pretreatment - $50-95/m3; PIAS advanced in situ bioremediation - $10-50/m3.
The vast majority of sites can be remediated using in situ bioremediation resulting in significant savings over other treatment options.
Pias Third Generation Biofilter Technology
The biofilters developed by PIAS can deal with a wide variety of air contaminates including composting odours, sulphides, VOCs, volatile fatty acids, TCE, H2S, BTEX, hydrocarbons and a wide variety of organic materials.
PIAS has developed an Advanced Bed Concept (ABC) biofilter for reducing costs and energy use associated with industrial air pollution control and environmental remediation projects. The commercial version of the ABC system is designed to solve two industrial problems which currently use considerable energy: high-mass flow rate air emissions and high concentration emissions of air toxics. The technology can handle contaminated air flow rates exceeding 100,000 cubic feet per minute. The new generation biofilter technology exhibits reliable, long term operational performance for a broad range of air contaminants and contributes to reductions of energy use by up to 80% compared to current methods.
