Online-Learning.com (OLL) was founded in 1995. Based in Ottawa,
it has employees across Ontario and Quebec. The company provides three services: eLearning Courses, eLearning Courseware Development and Consulting and eLearning Management Systems or Technology.
eLEARNING COURSES
OLL offers university-level online courses in the area of
Information Design to government, industry and the general
public. Courses include technical writing, visual design, human
factors design, user interface design, programming and XML-
related technologies, amongst others.
OLL courses combine high-quality branded content, a proven
mentored learning approach and university-level course
certification to offer a superior learning experience. The
content is developed under the guidance of recognized industry
experts (e.g. Information Design expert William Horton, XML
Technology expert Ken Holman). OLLs mentored learning model has
enabled us to achieve course completion rates of 83% compared to
eLearning industry completion rates of 20-40%.
OLLs courses are certified by Carleton University in Canada.
Students can receive certificates for completion of individual
courses as well as an Information Design Program Certificate or
an Information Authoring Program Certificate. We are rapidly
expanding our educational affiliates to include universities and
community colleges throughout the United States, United Kingdom,
Europe, Asia and Australia. For example, in October, we will be
announcing an affiliation with Ohio University in the United
States.
eLEARNING TECHNOLOGIES
Over the last eight years, OLL has developed core eLearning
technologies in the areas of online course authoring, management
and delivery. Our major development focus has been on using XML
technologies and SCORM learning standards to develop online
learning authoring and delivery solutions.
During 2000-01, with partial assistance from IRAP (Alice
Project), OLL developed an Authoring and Delivery tool that
simplifies the course development process. The tool allows us to
use an industry-standard word processing application and a pre-
defined set of course components (e.g. true/false quiz
questions) to generate courses in HTML, MS HTML HELP, PDF, XML,
and SCORM formats. In addition, this Delivery tool has been
developed using an open system software model which allows us to
plug-and-play different functionality into the tool (e.g. chat
modules, discussion modules).
ELEARNING CONSULTING
OLL has over 20 years of experience in developing and delivering
distance learning products. All of the principles have extensive
experience in both classroom and online training. For various
government and industry customers, we have developed courses,
application-specific DTDs, SGML tools and XML tools. In
cooperation with GEAC, OLL and ManageData developed software for
the GEAC 'MAX' XML editor.
We have become specialists in markup strategies, co-authoring
major texts, eLearning standards including metadata, and serving
on international standards panels. We have worked with
organizations such as CBC, Nortel, Isogen, Microsoft, and the
RCMP as well as for the Federal and Provincial governments in
the development and enhancement of capabilities in areas of
responsibility in this field.
As a result of our concentrated effort and interest in this
area, we have become experts in SCORM standards. Working with
DND on the ADL SCORM standards and the publishing of subject
matter white papers, combined with our chairmans recognized
knowledge of the e-Learning area, OLL is an established leader
in eLearning standards, in Canada and wherever SCORM technology
is used throughout the world.
