Success Stories:

RT-LAB has been incorporated into the company's Powertrain Core Competency training program. The program equips student engineers with skills to calibrate Electronic Control Units (ECU) for vehicle engines, in order to achieve specific design objectives. This includes gaining hands-on experience with Ford's standard calibration tools - software that interfaces with the ECU in order to allow parameters to be changed and optimized. Instead of using a real engine in the classroom, Ford trainers use real-time dynamic simulations of engines, running on RT-LAB Engineering Simulators, connected to the ECU via a specialized signal conditioning unit. The simulations behave like the real engine and allow the trainer to set up different running conditions, and the students to change parameters on their own laptops with the calibration tool loaded. In this way, the class can immediately see the response of the engine and ECU to parameter changes and different conditions, giving them a clean, safe, risk-free way of applying what they have learned to as close to a practical situation as possible.

Pratt & Whitney Canada was recently engaged by a China-based engineering company to develop a method of pumping gas through a pipeline using one of the company's standard gas turbine engines - the ST40. Opal-RT Technologies' RT-LAB proved to be ideal for use as a development platform, and was used by P&WC to develop the control system development environment for the project, as well as the integrated control system that is intended for field use.

As Bombardier Transportation recently unveiled their state-of-the-art JetTrain, an RT-LAB Industrial Embedded Controller was on-board providing the advanced control for the Pratt & Whitney gas turbine engine, derived from the PW 150 jet engine. This combination makes the JetTrain, described by Pierre Lortie, President and Chief Operating Officer of Bombardier Transportation as 'game-changing technology', the first 150-mile per hour (240 km/h) non-electric high-speed rail locomotive designed for the North American market.
