Meadow Lake, SK
Owned by the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, NorSask Forest Products is a state-of-the-art forestry operation which exports quality wood products to world markets. In 1994, it was honoured with the province of Saskatchewan's ABEX award for achievement in exporting. Key to the company's success has been the involvement of the community and the return of economic benefits to northern Saskatchewan residents. A priority for Meadow Lake Tribal Council has been to operate an environmentally sustainable forestry operation. In its six-year history, NorSask has planted 15 million seedlings, and supports site preparation, forest thinning, and tending practices to help nature along in its rejuvenation. In 1995, Meadow Lake was named the Forestry Capital of Canada, due to the efforts and achievements by the Council it its forestry approach. Meadow Lake Tribal Council is also taking steps to export its forestry expertise. It has established a unique 'Indigenous to Indigenous' partnership with the Nicaraguan Miskito Indians to look at the feasibility of developing similar forestry operations on the north-east Atlantic coastal region of Nicaragua.
