Newfoundland and Labrador Council on Higher Education
The Newfoundland and Labrador Council on Higher Education represents the public post-secondary education sector in Newfoundland & Labrador. The Council was established in Fall 1992 as a permanent body and operates under a Protocol Agreement with a clearly defined mandate. Membership consists of senior officials from the Department of Education, Presidents and other senior executives of the public post-secondary institutions (Memorial University of Newfoundland, College of the North Atlantic), and a representative of the K-12 Directors of Education. Provision has been made in its Protocol Agreement for input and attendance of other stakeholders as circumstances warrant. The Council Secretariat is appointed to execute directives and provide executive and analytical support for the initiatives undertaken.
The Council functions as a mechanism for active and meaningful cooperation among its members in joint planning and coordination of a variety of activities within the public education system. The Council also acts as an advisory body to the Minister of Education on province-wide policy and planning issues facing the post-secondary sector. Further, the Council provides direction on province-wide initiatives while responding to new policy issues as they emerge. It serves as a clearinghouse in the exchange of information among members and the community at large, maintaining open lines of communication to the provincial learning network.
Since 1949, when the province joined Canada, education has been a high priority of the provincial government. During the half-century since Confederation, extensive investments have served to create and maintain a world class of public education.
Memorial University, its affiliate the Fisheries and Marine Institute (with a combined enrollment of over 16,000) and College of the North Atlantic (with an enrollment of over10,000) offer a wide range of world class programs. Students can expect to acquire the skills they need to compete in the ever expanding global economy.
Recreation enthusiasts will love Newfoundland and Labrador. Outdoor activities are plentiful and include (to name a few) golfing, down hill and cross country skiing, fishing, whale and bird
watching, sports and entertainment events, hiking, and observing icebergs in late spring. For students who prefer the indoors, the urban centres offer theater companies, the symphony, modern and classical dance, art galleries, music festivals and exciting nightlife.
