Mitels competencies range from microelectronic components for wired, wireless and optical communications to fully networked multimedia systems and applications for enterprise customers.
In its Semiconductor business, Mitels competitive advantages include design and production capability for SLI solutions including analog and digital mixed-signal ICs; media-transparent connectivity for wired, wireless and optical applications; and engineering process diversity for specialty designs (e. g. ultra- low power and ultra-low voltage integrated circuits (ICs) for medical applications). In 2000, Mitel acquired Vertex Networks, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company providing high-performance network packet processing, switching and routing silicon solutions for the enterprise and wide area network (WAN) access markets. This acquisition will allow Mitel to offers its customers a range of circuit- and packet-based switching products with assured system-wide Quality of Service. Mitel Semiconductor has also produced working prototypes of photonic devices aimed at improving the price/performance ratio of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) by an order of magnitude or more.
In its Communications Systems business, Mitels products have competitive advantages because of their real-time and fault- tolerant system architecture design, and the companys ability to integrate microelectronic and system designs, develop software-intensive applications, including call-centers or messaging systems, and the strength of its distribution channels. Communications Systems is taking advantage of significant growth opportunities enabled by new technologies, including the trend to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and voice applications. In 2000, Mitel introduced Ipera 2000, an IP solution offering 99.999 percent reliable call control. The division also introduced the Impresa Speak@Ease Attendant, which allows incoming calls to connect to individuals simply by speaking the persons name or department.
