Micronet
Company Background
Micronet is a Canada-wide network of Investigators from
universities, industry and government research organizations
working cooperatively towards the development of the next
generation of microelectronic systems. Micronet is one of
twenty-two networks funded concurrently by the Government of
Canada, under its Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE)
program, and by Industry. The funding agency for Micronet is the
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
Micronet focuses on precompetitive research dealing with the
development of Systems on a Chip (SOC) for communications,
information and instrumentation systems.
The annual budget of the Network is of the order of $4.4 million
including the NCE award and industrial contributions. The NCE
funds provide considerable leverage to the direction and
industrial relevance of the research undertaken by Micronet's
University investigators who control an additional $5.3 million
in research funding from alternate sources.
Business Description
Micronet's mission is to mobilize Canada's research talent in the
academic, private and public sectors and apply it to strengthen
the competitive ability of the Canadian microelectronics and
information technology industries. Specifically Micronet's
objectives are to:
- Stimulate leading edge industrially relevant fundamental and
applied research, based on excellence as measured by
international standards, in areas critical to Canada's future.
- Educate and train world-class scientists and engineers in
technologies that are essential to Canada's productivity and
economic growth.
- Accelerate the exchange of research results within the Network
and facilitate the transfer of this knowledge to, and its
absorption by, organizations that can harness it to advance
Canada's economic and social development.
- Integrate University, Industry and Government research efforts
in the microelectronics area into a national network to enhance
Canada's industrial competitiveness on the international stage.
- Manage multidisciplinary, multisectoral research programs of
nationwide scope and develop partnerships that integrate the
research and development priorities of all participants.
