Megatel Computer (1986) Corporation
Megatel Computer Corporation (1986) of Weston, Ontario, is a
leading manufacturer of embedded PC's for the OEM. Megatel
supports both the PC/104 and ISA Bus standards. Megatel has built
its business on a straightforward philosophy, balancing hardware
and software to produce microcomputers which can be treated as
small but powerful components.
Megatel's latest 486 board, PC/II+i, has an Intel-based 33MHz DX
CPU. On-board peripheral controllers include Super VGA CRT/LCD,
floppy, SCSI, IDE, Ethernet LAN, serial, parallel and keyboard
ports. The PC/II+i also has 8k cache with floating point, 4 or 16
Megabytes user DRAM (with 32-bit wide data path) and 2MB of Flash
Disk, utilizing M-Systems TFFS. All features are incorporated on
a 100 x 100 mm (4' x 4') single-board form factor.
The small size of a megatel PC allows OEM's to embed industry
standard architecture into places never before considered
feasible. The PC compatibility ensures that the system can handle
the broadest range of applications without sacrificing
performance. Compact and powerful microcomputers and associated
system software have remained megatel's area of engineering
expertise to this day.

singleboard microcomputers. All of Megatel's PC's boast a
complete IBM(St PC compatible CPU with on-board video and disk
controllers, as well as, peripheral controllers, networking
capability, low power consumption and a rugged design for
embedded control.
The PC/II+ incorporates the Intel 386SL Chip Set. This high
performance CPU executes the 386 instruction set and all
operating systems designed for this set. The PC/II+ Ethernet
interface utilize's the Intel 82595 single-chip Ethernet
controller and its buffered slave architecture. Megatel supports
both 8-bit and 16-bit operation, both fully 802.3 compliant with
the AUI and TPE serial interface. Software for the Ethernet
interface includes full Novell IPX/SPX support.
Connections to the PC/II+ are simplified by the use of a 96pin
Eurocard connector. All peripheral 1/0 is available through this
single and highly ruggedconnector. The PC Bus is available
through a 64-pin and 10-pin
header. This allows the OEM to provide expansion through any of
the standard PC backplanes available today.
Megatel has also designed the PC/II+ to be PC/104 compatible with
the addition of the PC/104 adapter. The 4' x 4' format will allow
many OEM's to take advantage of the many available 'stackplane'
modules sold by members of the PC/ 104 Consortium. This enables
design engineers to stack other PC/104 cards onto their PC/II+
system.
Specifications:
386SL CPU:
The 386SL executes the 386 instruction set and all operating
systems designed for this instruction set including DOS, Windows
and Unix. It includes a single cycle execution unit and a 32-bit
internal data path that couples tightly to the on-board high
performance memory controller.
Main Memory:
The Megatel PC/II+ is available with either 2MByte, 4MByte or
10MByte of on-board DRAM memory in protected mode. The BIOS
automatically checks the memory at Power-On to determine the
amount of RAM available. No straps or jumpers are needed to
specify the size of the Main Memory. This is all handled
internally by an on-board ASIC.
Video Interface:
The Video Interface on the PC/II+ uses the C & T 65530
controller. The interface is compatible with colour or Monochrome
LCD and Flat Panel displays in VGA Mode and will operate with
RGB, VGA, TFT, STN, EL & Gas Plasma panels. VGA modes 1 - 20 are
also supported without additional drivers.

Product Information:
'The WCPU/104 is small enough to fit a wide range of embedded PC
applications. '
Megatel's first PC/104 product is a low cost CPU module for the
OEM. This 'stackable' module features RAM, ROM and Keyboard
controllers.
The WCPU/104 includes the 80C88 CPU with a multifunction ASIC.
The WCPU module also has 256Kbytes of on-board memory, an
industry standard BIOS, a speaker port, keyboard port and reset
connector.
As a low cost CPU, the WCPU/104 offers the OEM a cost effective
time efficient path to market. Utilizing the PC/104 form factor
also allows the use of existing PC/104 modules presently
available from other vendors.
The WCPU/104 faithfully reproduces both the hardware and software
environments of the PC architecture in a substantially reduced
form factor. The required bus signals are made available through
the 64-pin PC/104 connector. This bus represents the industry
standard 8-bit PC Bus. Such a format allows the engineer to begin
a design with a
bus-level PC, then add PC/104 modules, to develop a specific
product which is tailored to their application.
The introduction of the WCPU/104 module has allowed Megatel to
diverge from the 'Busless Single Board Computer market and
include in it's product line the rapidly developing PC/104 bus
standard for embedded miniature PC's.
Specifications:
BOARD DESCRIPTION:
The WCPU/104 module uses an 80C88 8MHz CPU. An ASIC is used to
replace the LSI peripheral chips (82C37A, 82C53, 82C55A, 82C59A,
82C84A, and 82C88). The ASIC signals are buffered on-board by 6
octal buffers, BIOS EPROM socket and miscellaneous descrete parts
mounted on a PC board.
MEGATEL BIOS:
Megatel includes with every PC/104 board it 100% industry
compatible XT BIOS. Utilizing only 8Kbytes, it allows 24Kbytes of
option ROM space on the WCPU/104.
MEGATEL PC/104 PRODUCTS:
The WCPU/104 is Megatel's first PC/104 offering. Other products
planned include a Video/Flat Panel controller, (CGA, Hercules
Video and Graphics Flat Panels), a Flash silicon disk (up to
25Mbytes of non-volatile storage) and a QTB/104 I/O Break-out
board including: 2 Com Ports, 1 LPT, High Density Floppy
Controller, SCSI HostAdapter, Keyboard Port, Printer Port and
Reset Switch.
Oem Kits
Megatel's line of single-board computers are complemented by the
flexible stackability of the PC/104 Break-out Modules. All of
Megatel's adapter boards provide PC/104 Bus compatibility in a
100 x 100mm (4' x 4') form factor; a small rugged design for
embedded control.
Connections from the PC/104 Module to any of Megatel's PC based
single-board computers are simplified by the use of a 96-pin
Peripheral I/0 connector and a 64-pin ISA Bus connector. If the
Ethernet option is installed on the PC/II+ or PC/II+i, then the
QTB/104 and OTB/104AT can also be ribbon cabled to the 10-pin
Ethernet header.
All peripheral I/O signals from the 96-pin I/O connector are
attached to appropriate peripheral headers or connectors on the
QTB/104 or QTB/104AT. All ISA Bus signals from the 64pin ISA Bus
connector are converted and connected to the standard PC/104 Bus
or ISA Edge Connector.
These small and rugged break-out boards (QTB's) are designed to
be mounted either underneath or on top of Megatel's PC boards
(PC/II+i, PC/II+, PC/+v).
The small PC/I04 format will also allow many OEM's to take
advantage of the many available 'stackplane' modules sold by
members of the PC/I04 Consortium, or any nonstackthrough PC/I04
cards.
