Environmental Products And Services

District Heating And Cooling (dhc).
District Heating and Cooling (DHC) or District Energy Systems provide heating and cooling through a distribution system to customers ranging in size from single residences to large industrial complexes. The sources of heat (or 'cool') are typically one or more central plants feeding the distribution system with steam, hot water or chilled water. DHC systems can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide ( CO2), methane (CH4), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and sulphur (SOx), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by a community thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ozone depleting chemical emissions and acid rain contributors. On a smaller scale DHC can also improve local air quality by reducing the number of points of emissions. The environmental benefits of DHC systems are due primarily to the centralization of the energy producer, which offers: Easy addition of state-of-the-art pollution control devices which would be impractical on a building by building basis; Higher efficiencies under part load conditions by shutting down individual boilers or chillers and operating the remaining equipment at maximum efficiency; More efficiency than individual energy plants as they are operated and maintained by trained staff who are dedicated to producing energy; Producers of waste heat (e.g. Thermal Power Generators) to contribute that energy for building heating; Technical upgrades to be easily added, including retrofitting boilers with low NOx burners, flue gas heat recovery scrubber systems, plume abatement techniques, CFC replacement, etc.; The ability to be converted to use a variety of fuels such as biomass (e.g. straw, wood chips, peat etc.).
