Underwater instrumentation has been developed by MIE to non- destructively measure the residual thickness of steel substrates without requiring surface grinding. The resulting data gathered with this technique can be used to extrapolate overall section loss and evaluate strength of the submerged portion of structures such as bridges, steel sheet pile walls and piles. Pitting is also measured with this technique, which is critical in anticipating failure of containment structures such as pipelines and ship hulls.
In the course of our many underwater investigations, we have observed the proliferation of zebra mussels and their effects on structures. The invasion of this mussel has resulted in unprecedented fouling thicknesses and corrosion potential in the Great Lakes. Consequently, we have undertaken biological research to quantify the phenomena of microbially influenced corrosion occurring on steel in the presence of Dreissena polymorpha with our non-destructive testing techniques.
MIE has the capability to provide high quality underwater photo and video documentation of the structural and environmental conditions of the site. In addition MIE can deploy and photograph sampling and monitoring equipment and conduct environmental site surveys under the direction of the prime investigator. Our senior engineer and environmental specialist are qualified commercial divers who can provide knowledgeable, first hand assessment of site conditions underwater.
Our diving equipment systems have been developed to combine safety and portability for quick deployment and access to remote or difficult sites.
MIE has developed a method for mapping the surface contours and thickness of pitted steel underwater, using ultrasonic testing combined with photogrammetry.
We have engineering personnel with extensive experience in inspecting marine structures and who are also trained commercial divers that can carry out underwater inspections.

Reconstruction of the Dunnville Dam near the mouth of the Grand River, Ontario. This structure, originally constructed in the early 1800's was completely rebuilt in the 1990's. The new works included a main dam constructed with steel sheet piling, and three weirs, all of different construction, with one featuring a fishway.
