Limnofix Inc. - Golder Associates
Golder Associates is an employee-owned international group of
consulting companies specialising in providing geotechnical
engineering and environmental science services for civil
engineering and natural resource projects. Founded in Canada in
1960, Golder Associates employs more than 2,700 individuals,
including more than 1,600 professional staff, in offices
throughout North America, Europe, Australia, South America and
Asia.
Environmental Profile
Sub-sectors: water resources; environmental assessment; site restoration / reclamation; remedial environmental investigation and implementation; solid and hazardous waste facility investigation and design; mining.
Golder Associates co-developed the in situ sediment treatment technology with Environment Canada in an effort to provide a cost-effective alternative to costly dredging and off site disposal or treatment. The patented technology involves addition of specific chemicals directly into the sediments to achieve the desired effect. The technology is particularly suited for odour control arising from the presence of reduced sediments (low redox) and water quality improvement (eutrophication) of water supplies by increasing the redox of the sediments.
Implementation of the technology follows a series of pre-defined steps that include site delineation, bench scale testing, regulatory oversight and cleanup/performance specification, pilot-scale testing and full-scale implementation. The laboratory testing can be performed either in our in-house laboratory or at one of many commercial laboratories.
Each remediation project requires specific configuration of the hardware (sediment thickness, water depth, sediment treatment depth, propulsion system, barge sizing and maneuvering, equipment storage etc.) and specific chemical supplies (oxidant, amendments etc.). Equipment construction and mobilization is approximately two months, however, existing equipment is used wherever possible to hasten project mobilization.
The technology has been tested and applied in fresh water and marine environments in water depths up to 23m. The contaminants targeted include sulphides (for odour control), oil and grease, petroleum hydrocarbons and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and phosphorus. Full scale applications have been successfully implemented in the USA (TPH nad PAHs) and Hong Kong (sulphides).
Geographic Marketing Activities:North America South America Europe Australia Asia/Pacific (China, Hong Kong, ASEAN countries).

Limnofix In Situ Sediment Treatment Technology (list)
The Limnofix In Situ Sediment Treatment Technology (LIST) has been developed and patented by Environment Canada to remediate contaminated aquatic sediments. The technology was designed as a cost-effective alternative to traditional dredge and ex situ treatment of sediments contaminated with organic compounds; notably PAHs, TPH, and BTEX. Environment Canada has granted Limnofix Inc. the worldwide licensing rights to the technology.
LIST involves addition of an oxidant and, where appropriate, amendments directly to the sediments to stimulate indigenous bacteria to bioremediate the organic contaminants. This technology is applicable in situations where: it is cost-prohibitive to dredge; ex situ treatment alternatives are unavailable (e.g., space and disposal limitations); dredging is likely to compound the problem (resuspend the sediments); dredging and ex situ treatment will invoke regulatory constraints (e.g. RECRA).
LIST is suitable for both fresh and saltwater systems including lakes, rivers, harbours, estuaries, marinas, and industrial process ponds. Industries in which this technology is applicable include petroleum, wood processing, steel and aluminum, food industries, and any others that discharge effluent to the aquatic environment.
LIST can also be used strictly as a method of oxidizing the sediments to remove sulphides for odour control and of precipitating phosphorus (eutrophication control).
LIST has been used in water depths from 2 to 23 m and has achieved treatment rates of 1 acre/day. Costs vary with the treatment area size and goal of the project and range from $35 to $75/m2.
