Research Capacity: The Centre has expertise in wood pulping, pulp bleaching, secondary fiber processing and paper making. It collaborates with several companies on R&D projects and provides distance education to mill personnel. It has capabilities for testing, technical and library services in areas of interest to the pulp and paper industry.
Research Projects: The following research projects are presently ongoing at the Centre: Chemical Pulp Bleaching: Retention of yield and strength properties during oxygen delignification; Catalyzed H(2)O(2) delignification; Mechanism of CIO(2) generation with methanol or H(2)O(2) as reducing chemical.
Mechanical Pulp and Recycled Fibre Bleaching: use of displacement bleaching techniques in mechanical pulp bleaching; effect of metal ions on brightness and brightness stability; multistage brightening; novel brightening processes and process conditions; improved metal ion removal techniques; recycled fibre bleaching to very high brightness.
Pulping: kinetics and pulp strength development during mg-based sulfite pulping; mechanism and kinetics of cellulose degradation.
Research Organization
The Centre is a university based pulp and paper research and education organization. It receives funding from NSERC (National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), UNB (University of New Brunswick), Dr. Limerick and several industrial partners. The Centre has a library, several research labs, two pilot plant labs, a constant temperature/humidity room for paper testing, a wet lab for pulp processing, analytical facilities (IC, GC, GPC, HPLC, UV, AOX, etc.) Testing equipment (tear, tensile, burst, zero-span, brightness, etc.) and specialized equipment (Fiber Quality Analyzer, handsheet machine, PFI, digesters, oxygen delignification reactor, displacement washing set-up, fluidized bed pilot plant, etc.). Its personnel consists of academic staff members, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, research assistants and support staff.

The Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre has developed several low cost sequences which produce high brightness, high brightness stability mechanical pulps.
The Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre has developed a process which produces chlorine dioxide by using both methanol and hydrogen peroxide at the same time.
The Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre has developed several techniques involving oxygen delignification with chemical additives and/or pre- and post-treatments which result in extra lignin removal without affecting the pulp viscosity and with improved final strength properties of the fully bleached pulps.
