Life Sciences Electron Microscopy Unit
The Life Science Electron Microscopy Unit at McMaster provides
transmission and environmental scanning electron microscopy
services to university, government and industry researchers.
Environmental scanning electron microscopy allows dynamic studies
in specimens due to changes in hydration, dehydration,
sublimation, heating, freezing, melting, tension, compression,
bending, dissection and the addition of liquids or gases. Our
tensile strength heating stage allows loads of up to 1000 lbs at
temperatures up to 1000C. A cryosystem allows studies of
samples down to -160C. Our heating stage will permit
controlled heating from ambient temperature to 1500C. Energy
dispersive x-ray (EDX)analysis capability permits localization of
elements and image analysis. Our contrast enhancement PiXision
system allows images to be manipulated to reveal new details.
Our transmission electron microscopy facility permits studies of
thin sections and also has EDX analysis and image analysis
capabilities.
