BIRDSTAR is the first authoritative guide to birds of North
America. It was originally developed in DOS in 1987 and known as
``The Electronic Birder``. It is now on CD-ROM and only available
for Windows 95. It covers all birds of North America - over 900
species. It displays high-resolution photographs, summer
breeding and winter distribution maps, as well as providing the
birds' songs and calls.
Birdstar is a better reference source for learning about North
American birds than conventional printed guides are. It uses
those multimedia, audio and visual, attributes of wild birds that
appeal to the nature enthusiast. Birds are so multimedia that a
computer guide for birds is a natural use for this technology.
The interactive identification component of Birdstar uses an
easier, more delightful and effective way to identify birds. It
simply asks questions about what was seen. Just click on the
appropriate answers on the screen as the questions appear. The
questions focus attention on the key features of a bird to look
for in the field. The guide not only re-enforces what
distinctive field marks to look for but also identifies birds
based on size, habitat and unique behaviours,
Alternatively, you may use the index. The index acts like an
encyclopaedia for the birds of North America. By merely naming a
bird you access its picture, species distribution map, its
songs/calls and a written description. With such easy access to
pictures and sound this affordable guide is being used as a
reference in libraries and schools.
When people initially become birders they usually have to see the
bird first to identify it. As skills advance they recognize a
bird's song and may identify a bird by a single note. Birdstar's
Birding By Ear Challenge quickly improves these hearing skills.
There are three skill levels and eight distinct bird groups to
choose to be tested from. The beginner level randomly picks from
40 possible common birds. The intermediate level is more
difficult and chooses a song to play from 130 possible species.
The expert level will pick a song at random from all the bird
songs on the CD - 530. A group selection allows testing on
specific groups of birds; eastern or western warblers,
flycatchers, mockingbirds, thrashers, sparrows, thrushes, vireos,
and wrens. The program chooses a bird from a selected category
and then plays its song as requested. You can choose to have the
recorder (sonogram) shown on the screen as the bird sings if you
wish. After the song has played you can view the bird to
determine or confirm the bird's identity.
