LGL Limited, Environmental Research Associates
LGL Limited, a Canadian owned company, was formed in 1971 to conduct environmental research. LGL maintains offices in the Toronto area (King City), in Sidney, British Columbia, and in St. John's, Newfoundland. LGL Limited is affiliated with LGL Ecological Research Associates Inc., with offices in Byran, Texas, and Anchorage, Alaska. All LGL companies are owned and managed by their respective employees.
LGL Limited has maintained a base of operations (office, laboratory, and warehouse) in St. John's, continuously since 1979. The office was originally established to conduct the Offshore Labrador Biological Studies (OLABS) for Total Eastcan and Petro-Canada. Work conducted from this office has consisted of environmental research and assessment, monitoring, wildlife census and management, and fisheries research and management (marine and freshwater). Major local Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) in which LGL has participated include the Gisborne Lake Water Bottling and Export Project, the Terra Nova Offshore Oil Development, the Hibernia Oil Development Project, the Outer Ring Road and the Upper Salmon Hydroelectric Project. Work in Labrador has included assessment of water quality, fish, and fish habitat pursuant to transportation and hydroelectric developments.
LGL conducts research on behalf of clients in government and industry. Traditionally, most of LGL's clients have been in Canada and the United States. Recently, LGL has expanded its client base internationally, with projects in the Caribbean, Africa, Indian Ocean, Denmark, Russia, and Australia.
LGL maintains an in-house staff of about 49 professionals with expertise in a broad range of disciplines, including birds, mammals (terrestrial and marine) and fish; freshwater, marine and wetland ecology; disturbance effects; environmental assessment; and data analysis. Several staff members are world experts in their fields, regularly participating in international committees and conferences; they also publish regularly in the primary scientific literature. LGL's senior staff are often called as expert witnesses at environmental hearings. In addition, LGL is very effective at building project teams, calling on expertise, when required, from its roster of external expert consultants in other firms and in academia.
A key to LGL's success has been the stability of the company, resulting in low staff turnover. Sever staff members in each major office have been with LGL for 10-20 years. This experience enable s LGL to complete assignments efficiently, on time, and within budget, and with a high degree of scientific competence. LGL has conducted approximately 2,000 studies and impact assessments from 1971 to date. These studies demonstrate our ability to perform scientific work in the field and office, to evaluate the environmental impacts of human activities, and to satisfy the requirements of clients in industry and government. LGL's continued success as a company after more than 25 years of work in this field demonstrates the credibility of the firm and of its individual employees.

Multidisciplinary Consulting Services That Provide Scientific Analysis, Environmental Impact Assessment And Innovative Solutions.
Multidisciplinary environmental impact assessments allow a site to be assessed for past or future environmental impacts. The firm works closely with the client in researching the past uses of a site, as well as determining the possible effects of any proposed uses or projects. The client's needs, and the parameters of the environmental problem or project are taken into consideration throughout the assessment. The assessment may include the use of tools such as GIS, computer simulation and modelling, and statistical analysis. The firm will
then develop an approach or master plan tailored to the client's needs and problems and issues outlined. If necessary, communication plans, training and public education programs may also be implemented.
