Established in 1989 and operating on an international scale, Knowaste LLC is the proprietor of patented technologies for the recycling of absorbent hygiene products, including disposable baby diapers, incontinence products and disposable bedliners, into sanitized reusable paper pulp and plastic components.

With over a decade of development and testing, Knowaste has the proven, tested and patented technology that is making the recycling of absorbent hygiene products as easy as recycling plastic, glass, aluminum and paper.

Through this company's efforts, the environmental and public health concerns associated with disposable diapers and the need for recycling have gained worldwide attention. There is no company better prepared or positioned to successfully address the mounting worldwide disposable diaper dilemma than Knowaste.

Knowaste's current projects include:

Arnhem, The Netherlands, is home to the world's largest and most sophisticated recycling facility for absorbent hygiene products, including disposable baby diapers and adult incontinence products. Built and operated by Knowaste, this multi-jurisdictional plant draws recyclable materials from across western Europe, primarily servicing nursing homes and elder care facilities.

Knowaste and SGS Australasia, a leader in verification, testing and certification services, has licensed the patent for the MyPlanet recycling system in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The MyPlanet facilities, launching in August 2004, will implement diaper recycling programs throughout Australia.

Patents for the Knowate diaper recycling technology have been issued for Korea and Japan and diaper recycling programs are expected to be launched in the near future.

The Knowaste technologies are universal in nature, and Knowaste invites inquiries from international markets.

Major Clients:

Spanning the globe, Knowaste has established diaper recycling programs in the European Union, Australia, Asia and North America.

Success Stories:

Netherlands:

Capable of processing 100, 000 tons of diaper material per year, Knowaste's Netherlands facility is a shining example of a state-of-the-art, large-scale processor at work. Operating since 1999, the facility was bulit to meet the needs of a multi-jurisdictional region, primarly servicing nursing homes and elder care facilities.

At full capacity, the Knowaste large-scale recycling facility has the ability to:

-Save 150 million gallons of fresh water that would be used in the normal production of cellulose fiber. -Save more than one million cubic meters of natural gas; enough energy to power a city with a population of 10, 000 for one year. -Save more than 230, 000 trees from being harvested each year to obtain the equivalent fiber that can be recovered from this facility.

Santa Clarita, California:

In November 2002, Santa Clarita, CA and Knowaste launched a nine-month demonstration program designed to test resident response to diaper recycling as well as the technical feasibility of collecting, processing and recycling diapers. It was also the first time a marketable model of a customized Knowaste Diaper Processor ('KDP') was constructed and operated, in contrast to the large-scale plan in the Netherlands.

The demonstration program was a success on many fronts and provided valuable information and feedback to assist in creating and implementing future diaper recyling programs. Knowaste proved the American public strongly supports diaper recycling, the process works, diaper recycling can be a cost-effective option for municipalities and an active market exists for the recycled diaper materials.

Testimonials:

'I hope the information obtained through Santa Clarita's [diaper recycling] demonstration program will help city leaders across the nation as they explore the feasibility of implementing diaper recycling programs in their own communities. Given their convenience and popularity, disposable diapers are here to stay and constitute a significant portion of household trash. As cities explore what additional items in their waste streams can be effectively recycled, your technology offers them a new opportunity.' -Mayor Cameron Smyth, City of Santa Clarita December 9, 2003

'Disposable diapers, containing untreated human waste, present public health concerns, potentially contaminating precious groundwater supplies... We applaud your efforts at making disposable diaper recycling a new environmental priority in California.'

  • Heal the Bay

August 13, 2003

'Since 3.3 million tons of disposable diapers or 20 billion actual diapers are dumped into U. S. landfills annually, this is clearly an issue whose 'time has come'... We believe that developing programs for the proper treatment and recycling of personal care products is in the long term best interest and health of California consumers.' -California Nurses Association March 2003

'Landfill capacities are diminishing and hurdles to siting new landfills remain politicallyl and environmentally insurmountable. Disposable diapers are one of the single largest household items still disposed of in landfills... Disposable diapers, presenting significant environmental and public health concerns, simply don't belong in our landfills.' -Planning and Conservation League August 21, 2003
