In 1988 Kootenay Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (KMC) acquired exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture, market and service the KMC/FMC Track Vehicles. KMC facilities are located on a two-acre site in Crescent Valley, B. C.. This property includes buildings that house engineering and manufacturing facilities, a parts warehouse, component and machine assembly and administration and marketing offices. Crescent Valley is located in the heart of the steep slope logging areas of B. C. The 'new generation' KMC 1000 and 2000 series tracked Vehicle is a specialized tool designed for a niche market to traverse on steep slopes and sensitive areas as well as in wet or boggy conditions. This KMC Track Vehicler can work in areas without skid roads. KMC is the only manufacturer of the fast track, low-ground pressure vehicle. The primary design characteristics of the KMC HSST Vehicles are balanced weight distribution, torsion bar suspension and 'live' steel track. The forward mounting of the power train and extendible arch provide a favourable weight distribution. Torsion bars, attached individually to road-arms, provide sprung suspension. Each set of road wheels move independently, thereby allowing the tracks to conform to uneven surfaces. The high strength, cast steel track pads, connected with rubber-bushed steel pins, permit track flexibility, yet prevent metal-to-metal wear and soil contamination. This concept meets current environmental timber harvesting guidelines. Because of its light flotation and low ground pressure, the KMC Vehicle has excellent ground tractability, resulting in minimal soil disturbance and compaction, with a smoother ride. It is able to combine larger payloads with higher speeds for increased productivity. The need for this type of vehicle is recognized internationally.

  In July 1988, Kootenay Tractor & Supply Ltd. (KOOTRAC) acquired exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture, market and service the FMC Track Skidders. A new division of KOOTRAC, Kootenay Manufacturing Co. (KMC) was established to produce and market the High Speed Steel Track Skidder. KMC is located in Nelson in the heart of the steep slope logging areas of B. C. Their personnel have over 65 years of cumulative experience with the FMC and now the KMC Woodlands Equipment, and are well versed in timber harvesting techniques.

  The new generation, KMC 1000 and 2000 Series Skidder is a specialized tool designed to harvest timber on steep and sensitive areas as well as in wet or boggy conditions. The KMC Track Skidder can work in many areas without skid roads using a natural bed of debris which reduces the risk of surface erosion and protects nutrient-rich soils for the next rotation of trees.

  Although wheeled skidders with balloon tires and crawler tractors with extra wide track pads are used in logging on soft ground, the HSST concept is superior in many aspects, and fills the important niche of logging in soft, sensitive and steep ground. KMC is the only manufacturer of the fast track, low-ground pressure skidder.
