Itres Research Limited
ITRES Research Limited is a private Canadian corporation
headquartered in Calgary, Alberta which has provided high-quality
electro-optical instruments for the scientific and remote sensing
communities since 1979. ITRES conducts research and development
in applications using imaging detectors for camera systems that
operate in visible light, ultraviolet, near infrared, shortwave
infrared, and thermal spectral ranges. In addition, the company
has developed significant expertise in the successful commercial
development of applications and useful products using these
optical imaging technologies and in conducting large-scale
domestic and international acquisition programs.
Involvement in the development of both precision instruments and
their commercial applications has fostered a unique, creative,
and dynamic environment at ITRES that has allowed the company to
realize benefits not enjoyed by competitors. At times instrument
development activities have driven the development of
applications; at other times, the commercial technology
applications have driven improvements to the instruments.
On the instrument side of their activities, ITRES designs and
manufactures a suite of complementary optical remote sensing
instruments. Their flagship product is the CASI-3 (Compact
Airborne Spectrographic Imager, 3rd Generation). Using a 1400
pixel-wide CCD array, this is an all-digital, user-programmable,
hyperspectral imaging spectrograph, sensitive to visible and
near-infrared wavelengths (400-1050nm). Easily installed in light
aircraft, it produces orthorectified and radiometrically
calibrated continuous strip images or mosaics.
The CASI-3 augments the CASI-2 instrument, which uses a 512
pixel-wide CCD array. Distinguished by its precision,
flexibility, and low cost, the CASI-2 had been sold and utilized
worldwide. To date, 18 CASI instruments have been sold.
As of 2002, new commercial instrument developments for the
company involve two complementary technologies:
A hyperspectral shortwave infrared camera, the SASI (Shortwave
Infrared Spectrographic Imager) sensitive to wavelengths between
850 and 2450 nm; and
A microbolometer-based thermal instrument, the TABI (Thermal
Airborne Broadband Imager) sensitive to wavelengths between 8000
- 12000 nm. A hyperspectral upgrade is scheduled for 2003.
With these instruments, ITRES is able to provide camera systems
that provide more complete coverage between the visible and
thermal wavelength regions. Data from all instruments may be
integrated with data from other technologies, such as LIDAR and
IFSAR.
Regarding its commercial application activities, ITRES has
successfully developed useful data information products for
military, environmental, and resource management applications.
These include targets over water (submerged and emergent wetland
vegetation mapping, algae detection, chlorophyll concentration,
turbidity mapping) and land (forestry, habitat classification,
agriculture, weed mapping). Recent application development
activities of the company have focused on the early detection of
Mountain Pine Bark Beetle-infested trees using CASI data acquired
on a large operational scale.
