Iogen Corporation

Company Overview

Iogen Corporation is a specialty chemical company who is the world's leading manufacturer of bioethanol, a clean transportation fuel with no greenhouse effect. As a privately run, Canadian company started in 1974, Iogen has invested significantly in the area of enzyme technology for fibre processing over the past twenty-five years. This history of investment has made Iogen Corporation the technology leader in industrial enzyme applications.

An established player in the enzyme business since the early 1990's, Iogen develops, manufactures, and markets industrial enzyme products for the pulp and paper, textiles, and animal feed industries. Boasting an international customer base, Iogen enzyme products are used in fibre application processes throughout Canada, the United States, South America, Europe, India, Australia and the Pacific Rim. As the only Canadian company to manufacture enzymes, this market penetration is a significant accomplishment for Iogen Corporation, who independently carved out a niche for its new technology.

As Iogen has evolved from its early beginnings as an R&D company in 1974 to its current solid commercial position, Iogen has had several significant breakthroughs in the manufacturing and development of enzyme technology. These scientific breakthroughs have made the cost-efficient production of bioethanol possible.

Iogen has built the first-ever, bioethanol demonstration plant. This plant was built in partnership with Petro-Canada and Technology Partnerships Canada. Bioethanol, a clean transportation fuel, offers the opportunity for a domestically grown fuel that improves local farm income, enhances energy independence, and helps us meet the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to a U. S. DOE study, ethanol from biomass reduces greenhouse gases by 99% compared to gasoline. Iogen's demonstration plant heralds the beginning of an entirely new energy economy.

The potential of this energy economy holds the promise not only to provide a practical solution for climate change, but to provide a new income source for farmers. The types of feedstock used in the manufacture of bioethanol are corn stover, straw, hay, or switchgrass. These are all crops common to Canadian farmers. The building of commercial bioethanol plants in areas where these crops are available already in large amounts will invigorate Canada's farming communities by giving them a new market place.

Located in Ottawa, Canada, Iogen's enyzme manufacturing plant and adjoining bioethanol plant are located on Hunt Club Road, bordered by the Ottawa International Airport, Royal Route and the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Iogen has 85 employees, with 45% involved in research and development.

Iogen has active research and business relationships with F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. of Basel, Switzerland for the development and production of enzymes for animal feed efficiency, with Petro-Canada of Calgary, Alberta, for the commercialization of ethanol from biomass, and the National Research Council of Canada for the improvement of enzyme properties with protein engineering techniques.

  • Bio-ethanol.

Bio-ethanol is liquid fuel made from the fibrous portions of plants. Using Iogen Corporation's enzyme technology, this plant fibre is converted to sugars that are fermented and distilled to make ethanol. Common agricultural residues such as straw, hay, corn stalks, or wood chips can be used in the process. All of the major car manufacturers sell cars, trucks and mini-vans that can burn any ethanol content up to 85% (E85). Many of the world's scientists have acknowledged the environmental impacts of climate change. People and governments want environmental solutions that are not harmful to the economy. Since bioethanol can be economically produced, fits into the existing fuel distribution structure, and can be burned in today's cars, it meets this need.
