International Water Guard Industries Inc
Sub-sectors: Water and wastewater, Water treatment
Products/Services: Filtration and ultrafiltration, Ultraviolet light disinfection systems, Water purifiers
International Water-Guard Industries Inc.(IWG) is a Canadian-based water treatment company providing total water treatment solutions to industrial/commercial, residential and aviation industry customers throughout the world. International Water-Guard has particular expertise in the design and manufacture of ultraviolet water treatment equipment, and is the only company in the world
supplying ultraviolet drinking water sterilizers meeting FAA aircraft equipment standards. The company's ultraviolet disinfection products are also employed in wastewater applications ranging from small-scale industrial and community wastewater treatment to units sized to disinfect individual household wastewater.
The provision of custom-designed high-purity water systems is another important aspect of International Water-Guard's capabilities. Among the custom solutions available are: reverse osmosis systems, iron and manganese filtration, nano- filtration for hardness, odor and taste removal, and de-ionization. In addition, the company has considerable in-house expertise in water treatment system modification and maintenance.
International Water-Guard was incorporated in 1989 and has 34 employees. The company's offices and manufacturing facility are located in Burnaby, British Columbia. IWG's clients are located throughout North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific Rim. Industries in which IWG products are providing disinfected water include: aquaculture, forestry, pharmaceutical production, hospitals, laboratories, film processing plants, as well as the demanding and tightly regulated aviation industry.
International Water-Guard ultraviolet sterilization products are manufactured from light, strong Potable Grade PVC plastic, or stainless steel. International Water-Guard produces a range of ultraviolet water disinfection equipment with emphasis on three main sectors: industrial/commercial potable and process water, small community potable and wastewater treatment, and aircraft on-board potable water treatment.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT
International Water-Guard has developed ultraviolet
treatment systems suitable for the secondary treatment of biologically contaminated effluent. These systems are divided into two general classes: Small Scale Industrial/Community Wastewater Treatment, and Household Wastewater Treatment. These products have particular relevance in secondary sewage treatment applications where stringent local health regulations must be met, especially those with an added requirement for zero chlorine or other residual chemical discharge. While sewage plant effluent treatment is the most common and obvious application, ultraviolet irradiation systems can also be employed to treat other forms of biological contamination. Fish processing plants, slaughterhouses and laboratories are among the many potential beneficiaries of ultraviolet effluent treatment.
HOUSEHOLD WASTE WATER DISINFECTION UNIT
An increasing number of jurisdictions throughout North America are prohibiting the use of chlorine as a disinfection agent for the final stage treatment of household waste water. In response to this trend, International Water-Guard has employed its expertise in ultraviolet water disinfection to address the challenge of non-chemical disinfection. The result is the WG-1-LV-WW ultraviolet disinfection unit, which economically reduces bacteria counts in the final stage of household waste water treatment to acceptable levels.
To do this, the household waste water unit requires sewage pre-treatment to the level of National Sanitation Foundation Standard 40, Class One. This level of water quality can be achieved by many of the available household accelerated aerobic digester units. In common with other International Water-Guard ultraviolet water treatment products, the household waste water treatment unit is constructed of Potable Grade PVC plastic.
INDUSTRIAL / COMMERCIAL POTABLE AND PROCESS WATER DISINFECTION UNITS
Drawing on more than 30 years of research by the scientific community into ultraviolet water disinfection, International Water-Guard has developed a product line of closed chamber and open channel ultraviolet disinfection units.
Long-life, low pressure mercury arc lamps produce the energy for disinfection. The lamps generate ultraviolet rays at the optimum wavelength for micro-organism destruction of 254 Nanometers. As a result, all International Water-Guard ultraviolet water treatment units have a performance rating greater than 99.9% reduction of target micro-organisms. This standard applies throughout the ultraviolet lamp's specified 7,500 hour life span.
International Water-Guard ultraviolet disinfection units achieve the highest standards set for the water treatment industry and can be equipped with safety and water quality assurance features associated with NSF standard 55 Class A. Nominal operating flow rates range from 1 to 650 US gallons per minute (US gpm). Higher outputs can be achieved by parallel installations. Open channel unit flow rates range from 200 to 2000 US gpm. Pre-treatment filtration may be required to improve source water clarity and allow maximum ultraviolet disinfection performance.
International Water-Guard ultraviolet installations are sized to account for the known pumping rate, or to the maximum peak flow. This ensures that the volume of water entering the treatment chamber does not exceed the flow rate, and guarantees a lethal dosage of ultraviolet light.
AIRCRAFT POTABLE WATER DISINFECTION
UNITS
More than 900 of IWG's potable water treatment units are flying in aircraft around the world, ranging from Gulfstream GIV business jets to Boeing 777 airliner conversions. There are four models to choose from, including two with integral carbon filtration and advanced monitoring. These small, light, flight certifed aircraft products can be fitted to virtually any aircraft with an active potable water system. Flow rates range from 1 to 2 US gallons per minute.
CIRCULATING POTABLE WATER SYSTEM FOR AIRCRAFT
IWG is also supplying full aircraft potable water systems based on a patented new circulating potable water system concept that saves weight, space, and operating costs. The new system includes innovations in aircraft water distribution, storage, and layout that offer significant advantages for manufacturers and operators. The new system has been installed Bombardier Global Express, Gulfstream GIV, Airbus A310 and Boeing BBJ aircraft (in progress, May 2004). In addition to saving weight, space, and maintenance costs, a circulating potable water system installation also prevents freezing without the use of water line heater elements.

Ultraviolet Sterilization.
Water sterilization consists of the destruction of bacteria and viruses contained in the water.
Sterilization by ultraviolet has now become one of the most cost efficient methods for treating
commercial, industrial and domestic water supplies. UV treatment is accomplished using UV
irradiation. UV irradiation uses high intensity low-pressure mercury arc lamps to produce
germicidal UV rays.
The UV rays are absorbed by the DNA molecules in the nucleus of the
viral or bacteria organism which is then rendered harmless when sufficient dosage has been
absorbed. The use of ultraviolet light destroys 99.9% of all bacteria and viruses and eliminates
the need of chemicals. International Water-Guard Industries uses this technology in conjunction
with specialized filters to produce a final product that is free of harmful elements.
International
Water-Guard's main focus is on the design, manufacturing and installation of cost-effective water
treatment solutions for small to medium (1,500,000-2,000,000 gal./day) sized applications.
Installations include mining camps, forestry operations, aquaculture farms, food processing plants, bottled water plants, medical/dental laboratories, wastewater and aircraft.
