Institute for Human Services Education
The Institute is a registered private college whose mission is
to deliver top quality educational programs to those persons
wishing to work in the human services field in a variety of
professional settings. IHSE was originally founded in 1976 and
was known as Child Development Services, a joint project of the
Nova Scotia Departments of Education and Community Services. In
1992 it was incorporated as a private college under the name of
the Institute for Early Childhood Education and Developmental
Services. In June 2002, the Board of Governors decided to rename
our college the Institute for Human Services Education. It was
felt that this name was more inclusive of the Institute's
diverse programs and types of services offered. The first
program offered by the Institute was the Early Childhood
Education diploma. As the the Institute became recognized both
nationally and internationally it continued to grow and develop
its programs to include Special Education, Public School Program
Assistant and Youth Worker. Graduates of the Early Childhood
Education Diploma and the Special Education Diploma may continue
their academic careers at several Canadian degree granting
institutions. Students will be given various levels of advanced
standing at the University of Calgary, the Univeristy of
Victoria, Mount St. Vincent University, Ryerson Polytechnical
Institute and Northern College in Scotland. The Institute is
recognized by the Ontario Association for Early Childhood
Education as meeting the requirements specified in the Ontario
standard for professional training in the field.
