Imbibitive Technologies Canada Inc.
Imbibitive Technologies Corporation (ITC) is the exclusive worldwide licencee of IMBIBER BEADS technology from the Dow Chemical Company. IMBIBER BEADS were originally invented by Dr. Richard H. Hall, formerly of Dow's Central Research Department and now an ITC Director and Vice-President of Research and Development. ITC owns and operates a manufacturing facility in Arkansas, USA and several sales and support offices in North America and Europe.
IMBIBER BEADS performance characteristics have been 'verified' by Industry Canada through their Environmental Technology Verification Programme (ETV) (June 1997). The Company has also introduced an ABsorbent polymer for aqueous /acidic liquids (AQUABIBER). IMBIBER BEADS & AQUABIBER are Registered Trademarks of Imbibitive Technologies Corporation.

Imbiber Beads
IMBIBER BEADS are spherical plastic particles that absorb organic liquids and are applicable to a wide cross-section of organic chemicals. The polymer particles are solid, approximately 200-300 microns in diameter. There are no pores or voids to fill, as in an adsorbent. Once contact has been made with a compatible liquid, the IMBIBER BEADS 'drink' the liquid into their solid structure and swell.
With some liquids , the IMBIBER BEADS will expand up to 27 times their original bead volume (see figure 1). The IMBIBER BEADS will not release the liquid as a result of compression, gravitational pull, inclement weather (wind, waves, current or rain) or even if cut in half during a mechanical retrieval process. By increasing surface area, ad-sorbent materials release significantly more potentially hazardous vapour, whereas IMBIBER BEADS may reduce vapour rates five to six times.
The chemicals imbibed span a wide range of organic materials including hydrocarbons such as gasoline, #1, #2, #3 fuel oils, jet fuels and diesel fuel; chlorinated solvents such as methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorobenzene, and PCBs; aromatic solvents such as benzene, toluene, xylene, cumene, styrene; polar compounds such as methyl isobutyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acrylate, etc. The IMBIBER BEADS can also be used to immobilize low-level oily radioactive waste. IMBIBER BEADS for organic liquid immobilization can be blended with an organic 'wick' material. The wick promotes rapid migration of the liquid throughout the mix, so that the IMBIBER BEADS are more completely utilized.
This allows the most rapid absorption for a given liquid. The process is most rapid with low viscosity, low molecular weight organic liquids such as toluene, heptane, and chloroform. As liquid viscosity increases and/or molecular weight ('lights') fraction decreases, the rate of imbibition decreases for high viscosity oils, the addition of a quantity of low viscosity, light hydrocarbon will speed up the process and result in complete separation and immobilization within a practical period of time.
Use of IMBIBER BEADS in 'point-source' control (pro-active) applications has been successfully developed by The Company and 'verified' by Industry Canada. (Verification Data Sheets available upon request.) Drains properly fitted with IMBIBER BEADS 'Containment Systems; allow rainwater to pass, but in the event an organic liquid comes into contact with the IMBIBER BEADS located within the system, the IMBIBER BEADS 'swell' and effectively seal the leak path. There is no requirement for electricity or electronic sensors as activation of the IMBIBER BEADS is through physical absorption. In addition there are no moving parts in the Containment Systems.
Ideal for preventing contaminants from entering the environment at Bulk Storage Tank farms, storage areas, fueling depots, maintenance departments, and others. Advantages of IMBIBER BEADS: Efficient capture of organic liquids Total containment of organic liquid once captured Safer storage and handling of hazardous liquids Major reduction in release of potentially dangerous liquids Effective separation of oil and water (unaffected by water) Process/Product Application: Spill protection; Point source control; Hydrocarbons; Chlorinated solvents; Aromatic solvents; Polar compounds; Oily radioactive waste.
