Corporate Profile
INSTRUMAR Limited is a company that has developed leading-edge technologies capable of providing information on-line in harsh environments. The technologies have been developed utilizing 'intelligent sensors' designed by a multidisciplined team of electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineers. The applications are able to provide previously unavailable information that will help companies improve operational and financial performance.
INSTRUMAR has been recognized for its innovation and business excellence through a number of awards:
Excellence - Invention;
Industrial Design;
Merit - Invention.
The Company has also achieved quality recognition by successfully implementing a documented quality management system that complies with ISO 9001: 1994 series of standards including recognition for 9000-3 software quality.
INSTRUMAR has been in business since 1979. Research for its existing technology platform was started in the late 1980's.
The Company currently employs 40 people with one-half in the research and development group.

Aerospace Instrumentation:
Contaminant & Fluid Integrity Measuring System (C/FIMSSTM1)C/FIMS is an aircraft-mounted sensor system for monitoring the effectiveness of the applied de/anti-icing fluids and the detection of ice, frost and snow buildup on the wings of aircraft during ground operation.
This core technology resident in C/FIMS is patented by INSTRUMAR. The marketing of C/FIMS is coordinated through a Joint Development and License Agreement with Honeywell.
Polymer Fibers Instrumentation:
The Attalus Information system is a fiber sensor sytem that is capable of measuring on-line changes in fiber denier, interlacing and finish.
Oil and Gas Instrumentation:
Multi-Phase Flow Meter (MPFM) is an in-line meter which will monitor the flow of oil/gas/water mixtures for the oil and gas industry.
Ice Detection and Monitoring (IM101) Ice Sensor:
INSTRUMAR has developed a tower mounted ice probe for monitoring environmental icing. The sensor outputs data via an RS232 link and contains a solid state switch, which can be used to control de-icing equipment.
Contract Research and Development:
INSTRUMAR has performed a variety of contract research and development programs, including:
ETIPS Thermal Model Saltwater Battery for Rescu406 Optical Displacement Sensor for Space Station Liquid Carry Over Sensor for Columbus Orbital Facility - European Space Agency Monitoring of Breathing Gases (aerospace)
DuPont Canada - European Space Agency - Honeywell
recognizing its commitment to innovation and business excellence. These awards were presented by the Canada Awards for Business Excellence program, who honour outstanding business achievements from all industry sectors.
These include:
This prestige was awarded for the development of C/FIMS, our advanced electromagnetic sensor which detects the presence of contaminants and provides continuous monitoring of applied de/anti-icing fluids on critical aircraft surfaces during ground operation in severe weather conditions.
Received for the Colormet, a portable spectrophotometer that measures color by surface reflectance and can determine the color inside a sample when fitted with a fiber optic penetration probe.
Also received for the Colormet. In addition, INSTRUMAR has also been awarded:
Atlantic Canada Innovator of the Year, 1988.

In addition to INSTRUMAR's prototyping and manufacturing activity related to its own technologies, the Company also manufactures a bracket for AlliedSignal Aerospace Canada's (ASACa's) Emergency Locator Survival Beacon and is currently designing a crash-activated version of this beacon and expects to be manufacturing the beacon in early 2000 for ASACa.
The Company has utilized the software engineering group to:
100, 000 ton base of the production platform;
path planning algorithms to manipulate the arm in the space station remote manipulator system;
IGRIP, to build a 3D model of the arm;
transportation vessel and a semi-submersible floating oil and gas production unit;
System on the Hibernia offshore production platform as part of the training simulator for the platform control room.
The Company is currently developing software for the Terra Nova simulator to allow the simulation system to communicate with the distributed control system.
This new technology will measure the flow rate of relatively pure fluids such as fuels, pure water, and freon. The participants in this program are hoping this new technology will:
satellites.
The problem of multi-phase sensing is a concern of the petroleum industry. The MPFM is expected to measure on-line the percentage of oil, gas, and water mixtures through a pipe. The first full-scale prototype is expected to be constructed the third quarter 1999 and tested during the fourth quarter 1999 at a local flow loop built by Memorial University.
