HAT BIT SUPPLY Hat Bit Supply sells, rents and retips oilfield drill bits for use in oil and gas well drilling. Retipping is a welding process used to build up drill bit teeth with a hardened metal. With the teeth built up, the bits are well suited to further use. Retipped bits provide a less expensive alternative compared to the purchase of new drill bits. The company has developed an expertise in this remanufacturing process and the marketing of these products in the domestic market. In addition, the company sells and rents new or used drill bits. The bits are delivered by field salesmen to drilling rigs on a timely basis for use. Deliveries are made from any of the companies six locations. These locations are Redcliff, Brooks, Lloydminster, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Gull Lake, SK.
Many new drill bits are secured on a consignment basis from an Edmonton distributor. Sales of these bits attract a commission paid directly by the distributor to Hat Bit. In the most recent year the company has also began purchasing new drill bits from Russia. These bits are purchased from JSC Volgaburmash.
Use drill bits that are sold or rented are secured primarily from sources in Texas, Oklahoma and Illinois. These bits are freighted to the main shop, serviced and sorted according to appropriate use and location.
Retipping activities of the business include renewing Hat Bit stock as well as retipping customer's own bits. Hat Bit stock, when retipped, goes into the sales or rental channels. Customers bits that are retipped are charged and returned to the customer for drilling use.
CURRENT GEOGRAPHIC MARKETING ACTIVITY While the company is well based in the domestic Canadian market, export marketing is new to the company. It has had initial exposure to the process with occasional small shipments to the USA and to Venezuela. Marketing in these cases was handled direct through its head office in Medici
