Haida Fisheries Program
Products/Services: Fisheries: Stock assessment; Stock enhancement; Stock management; Traditional ecological knowledge.
Company Description: The Haida Fisheries Program operates under the auspices of the Council of Haida Nation and has been active for about five years. The Haida region is a major supplier within British Columbia's commercial fisheries and thus plays a key role in its management. The Haida Fisheries Program supported the North Pacific Symposium on Invertebrate Stock Assessment and Management in early 1995. Featured at the conference were results from a study undertaken by the Haida Fisheries Program, that surveyed the population of razor clams.
The Haida Fisheries Program has also undertaken a study of Haida Gwaii sockeye and coho salmon, that improves the understanding of the species. The Council of the Haida Nation implemented management plans for k'aaw (herring roe-on- kelp), sockeye, and recreational fisheries, while the Haida Fisheries Program continues to develop policies for conservation and the equitable sharing of fisheries resources, through initiatives such as the training of 'fisheries guardians'. The Council of the Haida Nation has also become involved in the area of forestry resources management. Offering a broad range of natural resource management services, the Haida Fisheries Program and Council of the Haida Nation are well-equipped to meet the varied environmental needs of governments, other First Nations and private sector firms.
