Company Overview

NAV CAN Canada Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments conducted for the transfer of 750 air navigation sites, and 2, 400 facilities to the newly formed private corporation, Nav Canada. Golder Associates was responsible for the management and completion of assessing 50 percent of the sites across all regions on of Canada, making use of personnel within 14 different Golder offices. The first phase of this project, specifically Phase 1 ESAs and preliminary Phase II ESAs, was completed in 180 days. The investigations were carried out in accordance with CSA Standard Z768-94, with an addition review of the fuel storage tank compliance. All Phase II programs were carried out in accordance with standard engineering practice within the specific region. The completed reports were subjected to legal and technical peer review.

From the Golder Ottawa Office, Golder participated in a jointly managed project. This project demonstrated our ability to deliver quality and consistent products, at a competitive cost, from a number of offices using qualified personnel holding engineering association licenses and/or permits in all provinces and territories. Many of the sites were remote and/or in the Canadian north, thus requiring extensive logistical co-ordination and planning.

Technology Profile:

The Golder group of companies have developed a number of environmental remediation technologies in order to facilitate and accelerate the resolution of complex environmental problems. Commercialized technologies are as follows:

Fractool: this technology relies on the hydraulic fracturing of the soil. It consists of the pumping of a fluid containing fine sand into low permeability soil matrix in order to facilitate the extraction of liquids or vapours; or it allows the injection of nutrients or bacteria to accelerate the process of contaminant biodegradation. This technology can also be used to diminish the permeability of the soil by injection of low permeability mixtures. It can thus help create horizontal or vertical confining barriers, which restrict the movement of contaminants and limit the extent of the impacted zones.

Limnofix: this technology uses in situ biodegradation or fixation of contaminated sediments present at the bottom of lakes or waterways, thus avoiding dredging operations and restricting suspension of large quantities of contaminated sediments.

Golder provides high quality technical and administrative expertise in the area of in situ and ex situ soil and groundwater remediation techniques, notably in;

soil and groundwater characterization;

risk analysis;

natural attenuation evaluations;

multi-phase extraction system ( vacuum enhanced recovery);

groundwater biosparging;

groundwater pumping and treatment:

soil excavation and off-site disposal;

hydraulic containment;

industrial effluent treatment;

biodegradation of impacted soil in piles;

soil vapor extraction and venting;

physical containment of impacted soil and hazardous materials;

biogas collection.
