At First Air, the North is not just one of our markets, but our primary market. Our company therefore serves a market that involves vast distances, a harsh climate and a demanding environment in which to operate equipment of any kind. It is therefore with considerable pride that, at First Air, we can say that we have successfully met this challenge for over 58 years of operation. We are also confident about our prospects for the future and in our ability as a northern airline to provide quality services to our customers and to the northern communities that we serve.
The following figures illustrate the level of service provided by First Air as Canada's northern air carrier. In terms of the movement of passengers to and from northern communities, it can be noted that in First Air expects to serve approximately 200, 000 passengers per year. This movement of passengers helps to bring government services to these communities, makes the northern tourism industry possible and provides for medical evacuations to southern hospitals.
The figures on the movement of air cargo, by First Air, on its regularly scheduled flights to northern communities, are equally impressive. On its scheduled flights, First Air expects that approximately twenty million kilograms of freight and mail will be delivered to northern communities. This figure, does not include First Air's air cargo shipments in the south or by way of our charter services. These shipments to northern communities include the movement of perishable foods, medicine and other necessities to northerners under what is usually referred to as the 'Food Mail' Program which assists the movement of these goods to northern communities.
As a result, First Air can therefore say with pride that it flies more people; delivers more freight and mail; and employs more people in Canada's northern communities than any other air carrier. This demonstrated level of commitment toward meeting the air service needs of northern communities, also means that First Air can say indeed that it is the premier airline of Northern Canada.
First Air has built up an impressive number of aviation 'firsts' which demonstrate the company's spirit of innovation and our commitment to serving our northern customers. For example, our company engineered the development of 'balloon' wheels to enable our aircraft to land on tundra or other difficult terrain. First Air's charter services and its maintenance and support services continue the tradition of innovation in the provision of air carrier services to our clients. In particular, First Air's comprehensive technical infrastructure, management experience and skilled line personnel have made the company the preferred carrier for those clients who have a special need for reliable air support in remote and unusual environments.
