Firebird Semiconductors operates a production site at Trail,
British Columbia, Canada which is equipped to produce the
compound semiconductors InSb and GaSb (experimentally GalnSb)
to or beyond the present commercial state-of-the-art' to
meet at least 60% of anticipated world demand . we have just established Ge semiconduction reduction, refining, crystal growth and fabrication capabilties and will significantly expand these throught the 2005-7 interval.
Equipment includes semiconductor zone refining, crystal
growth, fabrication and polishing equipment. Present staff is sixteen, many former employees of Cominco Electronic Materials, with 12-30 years experience with III-V compound semiconductors. For further information, please see our Web page at http://www.Firebird.bc.ca
Research Experience
Firebird has actively pursued the continuous improvement of
antimonide semiconductors by dedicating between 40 to 250%
of annual sales costs to research and development every year
since inception. Our goal is to be the premier supplier of
antimonide semiconductors - they are our primary focus while we expand into Ge semiconductor products. We pioneered and made the first commercial offerings of 4' diameter InSb and GaSb in the Fall of 2002-these have since permitted major improvements to IR FPA production efficiency and costs. We have currently active research to reduce the native acceptors in GaSb, to grow GalnSb
ternaries and to improve the available GaSb surface finish. We have
successfully completed four R&D projects with Canadian and
Province of BC partial funding, so are comfortable projecting,
carrying out and reporting on such programs.
Commercial operations
Firebird has an established customer base in the Americas,
Europe, Asia and Africa. We estimate that we now supply 40%
of the world requirements for InSb, somewhat less of the GaSb
market. We have developed these markets in the face of
three or more, much larger and well established competitors by
being focused on the antimonides, responsive to customers and
technically proactive. We provide custom-grown and fabricated
materials to established or leading edge' materials
specifications which have consistently improved our customers'
operations and economics. Our pricing is always competitive
and our support unmatched.
Our major customers are the divisions of the major aerospace
firms who fabricate infrared imaging focalplanes of military,
commercial and medical applications. We also supply smaller
quantities to research firms and universities working to extend
the applications of antimonides. As noted above, we have active
R&D programs internally and participate with partner companies
in external projects in related technologies. For example, we
have a tri-partite effort underway to develop and commercialize
thermo-photovoltaic devices for direct power generation from
thermal energy sources (analogous to solar cells drawing energy
from the sun but using closer, cooler sources as gas flames or
radiant surfaces).
