Environment & Sustainable Development Research Centre

The Environment and Sustainable Development Research Centre at
UNB was established in 1994 with funding from the Environmental
Trust Fund. The Centre provides a focal point between the
university, the private sector, government and the public. It
is independent of the traditional academic departments thus
reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable
development and the necessary integration of economic
development with environmental protection. The Centre provides
access to the research and development resources of the
University. The University is a member of the Environmental
Science Technology Alliance Canada (ESTAC).

The ESDRC conducts research and provides training courses under
contract or grant. The Centre has the capacity to facilitate the
implementation of sustainable development in industry,
communities, and resource sectors by the facilitation and
delivery of short courses in community sustainable development,
natural resource sector sustainability, environmental
management, stakeholder consensus decisions, and business
approaches to sustainable development.

Project areas are:

Community Livelihoods: assists and facilitates communities in
developing their own solutions to rural underemployment.

Institutional Adaptation: explores ways to achieve greening,
cost savings, and job enrichment for institutions and industry.

Action Plans for Sustainable Development: brings stakeholders
together to make Codes and Principles for the sustainable
development of Canada's natural resource sectors operational at
the regional and company level.

Policy and Decision Areas Where Consensus is Effective: research
into improving the effectiveness of the institutions and
mechanisms we use for resolving conflicts.

Training in Facilitation for Consensus: learn how to use
dialogues with stakeholder groups (public groups, business
sectors, government, educational bodies) to effectively reach
agreement and draw up action plans.

Distance Learning Course on Environmental Management: this
course uses the Internet structure and delivers modules on
environmental management.

Executive Courses for Sustainable Development: targets mid-
career professionals, and delivers a set of modules covering
sustainable development through distance learning and short
residential sessions.

Centre Director, Jessie Davies and Chair in Sustainable
Development, Steve Thompson, are experienced in environmental
management and facilitation of stakeholder consensus in a number
of Canadian natural resource sectors. They lead a team
conducting research into causes of conflicts among stakeholders,
developing tools for consensus, and providing training in
resolution of conflicts arising from different environmental,
social and economic values.
