Develop Emission Inventory, Monitor Air Quality, Model Dispersion.
A facility emission inventory provides a data base to determine compliance with regulations; provides information to government requests for periodic inventory data; is part of a pollution prevention program or environmental self-audit; can be used as a public relation tool; and may be a prerequisite to applying for an air permit. The greenhouse gas portion of the inventory may be used for climate change emission reporting. An inventory forms the input to dispersion models which are used to estimate the ground level concentrations downwind of the plant. Air quality assessments and regulations require the evaluation of the potential impacts of substance releases from industrial facilities.
To assess these impacts, the downwind concentration of the pollutants must be related to the source emission rates. Air quality modelling is used to perform these calculations. In general terms, air quality models use information on the substance emission rate, characteristics of the emission source and the topography and meteorology of an area to calculate the concentrations downwind of the source.
These services have been provided to the forest products and manufacturing industries, municipal government waste facilities, hazardous waste facilities, and airports. The firm utilizes dispersion models such as ISC3, PRIME, AERMOD, CALPUFF, EDMS plus in-house problem specific models. Special dispersion modelling procedures are used in assessing odour impacts. In addition, emission inventories are developed on urban, regional, and national scales for government agencies. Ambient monitoring programs are carried out to validate emission inventories and confirm compliance. Monitoring networks are operated for government and industry.
Developed A Marine Environmental Data Buoy.
Envirometrex Corporation and AEM Systems Inc. have developed an oceanographic data buoy for current and water quality monitoring using a real-time data acquisition system. This buoy system has been built, exported, commissioned, and personnel trained . The first system comprised three oceanographic survey buoys linked by packet radio to a central microcomputer on board a research vessel. Each buoy was capable of monitoring water quality and currents. The buoy batteries were maintained by solar panels providing them with a deployment time limited only by the need for re-calibration of the water quality probes. Optional platform equipment includes meteorological sensors, wave measurement, GPS tracking, and satellite communications.
Each of the buoys has its own internal data-logger which records data if the radio frequency links are not operating. The current meters are acoustically coupled to the surface data buoys. The collection and monitoring of all the sensor data is managed through the PC-based central receiving station. The resulting data are displayed in charts, graphs, and reports and can be exported to spreadsheets and databases for analysis. The buoys were used in an effort to restore a polluted estuary and inland lake. The data obtained provided a basis for understanding the system. The operational, scientific, and strategic usefulness of the data was enhanced by tailoring the presentation and analyses requirements to this specific requirement.
