ECD ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT CANADA LTD.
ECD specializes in the environmental assessment of buildings in terms of energy and environmental impact and indoor health. Activities include building assessments and audits, research and development, design advice, thermal analysis, advice on specifications and post occupancy monitoring. The primary focus of ECD has been as the operating agent of the BREEAM Canada methodology.
Building Assessments ECD Canada developed and wrote BREEAM Canada, an environmental performance assessment method for existing office buildings published by Canadian Standards Association as their publication
- ECD also adapted BREEAM for use by the federal government
and wrote Progress Toward Meeting Sustainable Development Commitments and the accompanying Reference Guide, which are used for the environmental assessment of federal government buildings within the PWGSC Alternative Form of Delivery. ECD originally developed the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) in conjunction with the Building Research Establishment in UK and was responsible for researching many of the issues covered. Recently, ECD developed PERFORM-A, a computerized tool for the performance assessment of buildings in terms of their operational costs, legal issues, health and productivity, and operation and management, as well as ASSESSA to assess buildings at the design stage.
Design Advice Working closely with architects, engineers and planner, ECD has assisted in the design of buildings, which meet all functional requirements, while having a greatly reduced impact on environment. Expertise covers energy efficiency in both domestic and non-domestic buildings, comfort, health and renewable sources.
Analysis ECD uses various packages to investigate low energy design strategies. These include the TAS simulation package for assessing the energy consumption, thermal comfort conditions and airflow in any new building. ECD does analysis of daylighting, lighting control strategies, and passive cooling techniques such as night cooling.
