Proj: Airport Runway Rehabilitation-Svalbard Airport, Norway Country: Norway Contribution:
The jet aircraft landing strip located in the settlement of Longyearben on the Svalbard island group (78 N latitude 15 E longitude) has long suffered from distress resulting from thaw of ice rich permafrost soils below the pavement structure. Over the past two years, EBA evaluated the past history and current conditions and developed remedial measures to counteract the pavement settlement problems. EBA conducted a geotechnical site investigation and installed instrumentation at the site.
Proj: Hazardous Materials Landfill-Mexico Country: Mexico Contribution:
EBA were selected to undertake the siting of a hazardous waste landfill in northern Mexico. The economic justification for the facility has suggested a target area for the site. Constraint mapping will be used to select a favourable site on the basis of natural suitability. These constraints include accessibility, topography, drainage, proximity of residences, geology and hydrogeology.
Proj: Oil & Gas Field Development-Yamal Peninsula, Russia Country: Russia Contribution:
Since 1992 EBA has had extensive involvement in the preliminary engineering associated with a gas condensate and an oil field development in this very northern portion of northwestern Siberia. The sites are located in the worlds most environmentally sensitive arctic tundra area which is characterized by extensive permafrost soil conditions, adverse arctic weather and complete lack of granular construction materials. The development is to include a deep water offshore loading terminal, some 1, 500 hydrocarbon production wells and all of the infrastructure required for production of the hydrocarbons. To date, EBA has conducted offshore geophysical surveys, geotechnical site investigations and prepared foundation, pipeline, well casing and road designs for the proposed developments.
Proj: Oil and Gas Field Development-Irkutsk, Russia Country: Russia Contribution:
EBA conducted preliminary engineering for the development of an oil and gas field in the east central portion of Siberia. Preliminary engineering studies included selection of road and pipeline routes as well as the preparation of designs for the infrastructure required for field development. The preliminary studies were used to evaluate the economic viability of the development.
Proj: Oil Field Development-Timan Pechora, Russia Country: Russia Contribution:
Over the past 4 years EBA has been involved in feasibility studies and design of the infrastructure required for a large oil field develpment in the Timan Pechora region of northern Russia. Work has included preliminary designs for roads, foundations, airstrips, well pads, pipelines, fuel storage facilities and docks. The development is situated in an area where permafrost soil conditions are continuous. EBA's field involvement has also included organization and supervision of a geotechnical drilling program through the entire 300 metre thick permafrost interval and, onsite granular resource investigations. EBA is currently preparing final designs for the first well pads, gravel quarries and oil production wells.
Proj: Pavement Structure Surveys-Finland Country: Finland Contribution:
EBA, through the wholly owned organization, Road Radar Ltd. has conducted ground penetrating radar surveys for road and bridge subsurface assessments in Finland directly for the Finnish National Road Administration. Commercialization of Road Radar has resulted in dialogue with many private and public entities in Western Europe and the United Kingdom.
Proj: Road Study-Svalbard, Norway Country: Norway Contribution:
EBA acted as the prime consultant for the design of a 70 kilometre long road from Longyearben to Svea. The road route selected by EBA traverses high alpine tundra characterized by permafrost and recent glacial soil conditions. The potential shortening of the route by some 25 kilometres through the construction of a 5.5 kilometre tunnel was also considered. An extensive evaluation of the environmental impact to the native flora and fauna of the area was conducted as part of the study.
