Digital Mapping Systems
Digital Mapping Systems provides surveying and mapping
services to customers with marketing and engineering
applications. Since its beginnings in land surveying in 1985,
Digital Mapping Systems has expanded its capabilities to
computer mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for
municipal and marketing applications.
Services provided include:
Surveying precision leveling, control and cadastral surveys
GIS conversion of paper maps to digital form, digitizing,
software development, digital format translation (AutoCAD,
SaskGIS, MapInfo)
Digital Mapping Systems is currently active in two main areas.
It continues to provide control and cadastral survey and
digital mapping services. The survey services can be provided
with electronic total stations and levels, and more recently
with GPS receivers.
The company has also been active in the digital data gathering
for the cadastral base map compiled by the Central Surveys and
Mapping Agency (CSMA) of Saskatchewan. It has developed its
own software using AutoCAD Lisp and the C programming language
for DOS and UNIX to supply data in the format required by
CSMA. The company provided a similar system for CSMA to
extract municipal and other boundaries from CSMA data. The
system generated enough interest that the package was
documented and supplied with training to the other consultants
working with the CSMA data. The software can be adapted to
convert other formats.
In addition to the digital data gathering, Digital Mapping
Systems provided CSMA with software to convert the finished
product to MapInfo format. MapInfo is becoming a popular GIS
package to handle the CSMA SaskGIS product. The Heritage
Branch of the Saskatchewan Municipal Government manages
archeological sites with a Windows-based MapInfo GIS data base
developed by Digital Mapping Systems using CSMA's SaskGIS
product. The system uses the half million quarter section
within Saskatchewan as a base for the GIS map. The Heritage
Branch also uses the 1:250,000 NTS maps as an overlay to
provide topographic features for the map.
In other areas, Digital Mapping Systems has developed a
boundary and highway map of Saskatchewan suitable for
marketing applications. It has topographic features,
railways, highways and municipal boundaries with 1986 and 1991
Census Canada data. Also completed are street maps for some
Saskatchewan cities that can be used for automated address
matching. Several courier, ambulance and transportation
companies use the maps for route design.
