Department of Land and Resource Science
The Department of Land Resource Science at the University of Guelph focuses research and teaching efforts on the earth's surface. The Department is an interdisciplinary grouping with 18 faculty representing the disciplines of Geology, Soil Science, Atmospheric Science and Land Resource Management and Planning. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Agronomy, Resources Management, and Earth and Soil Science, Atmosphere Science and Land Resources Management, while fifty to sixty students are registered in the Graduate Program at any time. The research in the Department focuses on characterization of resources, the use of this information in allocating resources for different uses, and the management of these resources for agricultural production, waste management, forestry and recreation.
With more than $66 million in research funding, Guelph is one of the country's top research institutions. Guelph researchers are involved in federally supported Networks of Centres of Excellence in bacterial diseases, insect biotech, robotics and intelligent systems, molecular and interfacial dynamics and aging.
About half of Guelph's research funding comes form the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The university also receives considerable support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering research Council. Guelph has eleven research chairs dedicated to advancing knowledge in such areas as land stewardship, animal welfare and plant biotechnology.
The Research Park Centre, the cornerstone of the university's Research Park, provides first-class research facilities and offices for companies that include agribusiness, chemicals and polymer design. The Research Park, home to a growing number of research-intensive industries, is located across the road from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food facilities and adjacent to the university campus.
Guelph offers many areas of study within the environmental field, including (at the B.A.level) Environmental Biology, Environmental Economics and Policy, Environmental Monitoring and Analysis, Environmental Protection, and Environmetrics.

Enhanced Land Treatment.
Improved strategies for waste and nutrient application to enhance soil microbial activities (30% increase in biodegradation capacity).
By studying the effects of biological processes on the formation and decay rates of soil organic matter constituents (C and N). This research is useful for the development of agricultural management practices for soil conservation. The basic understanding has also been applied to develop waste management technologies including application of food-grease and other organic wastes to land, and to composting.
Recently this research is being used to estimate the potential for organic carbon sequestration in soil, thereby reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. A simulation model has been used to predict the impact of various tillage and cropping practices, soil type and climate on soil organic carbon dynamics.
