Combustion gas turbines used for electric power generation require high purity injection water for NOx control. Cation-anion exchange is the common method of water treatment. However, for peaking power generating plants not operated continuously, cation-anion exchange units are not able to start up on demand and produce the high quality water needed.
Crandall developed a water treatment system for a 400 MW peaking power plant based on reverse osmosis to satisfy the standby requirement. It utilizes multi-media filtration for suspended solids removal, pH adjustment, reverse osmosis for dissolved solids removal, and mixed bed ion exchange for high quality polishing. Continuous analysis of the treated water insures quality. An added benefit is a significant reduction in the requirement of acid and caustic, reducing the environmental risk associated with these chemicals.
Crandall Engineering Ltd. has been involved in the upgrading of several wastewater treatment facilities. Where major expansions are involved, it is often difficult to maintain an acceptable degree of treatment while this work is being done, risking negative environmental impacts.
Working with our clients and government environmental agencies, Crandall has developed innovative design approaches to maintain acceptable levels of treatment during construction. This typically involves unique construction procedures and sequences which must be environmentally acceptable while resulting in a cost-efficient project. This engineering, technical and planning expertise is available to similar projects.
