Corporate Profile
Commsult Engineering Ltd. is owned and operated by K. James
(Jim) Couprie, P. Eng., a Professional Engineer with over 30
years experience in the design of RF, videoconference and
telephone systems. The company has been in existence as a sole
proprietorship since 1978, and has recently been incorporated.
It is not affiliated with any manufacturer or supplier of
equipment.
Mr. Couprie maintains his professional affiliation with the
Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and
Geophysicists of Alberta. Commsult is the holder of APEGGA
Permit to Practice number P-7055.
Design, Marketing and Management of Antenna Sites
Mr. Couprie has designed and managed antenna sites for Motorola
Canada Inc., for Telus and for ATCO Electric. These sites have
included ground-based towers, rooftops and mountaintops, and
have accommodated systems using VHF, UHF and microwave
frequencies. He was responsible for developing a marketing
program and administrative systems that resulted in a
quadrupling of revenues for one system over a four-year period.
He has recently conducted surveys to determine compliance with
standards for RF exposure as published by Health Canada in
Safety Code 6.
Design and Implementation of Mobile Radio Systems
Systems designed by Mr. Couprie are in use throughout Western
Canada. Major installations have been used by police, fire and
ambulance systems, as well as by electric power utilities.
Public systems designed and implemented include the former
Edmonton Telephones (now Telus Mobility) cellular and public
trunked networks. Systems varied in size from single sites to
major industrial facilities to province-wide coverage, and
include dispatch voice, paging, telephone interconnect and data
applications.
Recent projects include evaluation of tenders for a 3100 unit
transit and public works system in Alberta and design of an
eight site AMPS cellular network in northwestern Ontario.
Design and Implementation of Point-to-Point Radio Systems
A number of microwave, VHF and UHF point-to-point systems have
been designed by or under the direction of Mr. Couprie. He has
worked with equipment from Farinon, Alcatel, MDS, Nortel,
Western Multiplex and most North American VHF and UHF radio
manufacturers. Systems have included analogue and digital
multiplexers from many different manufacturers.
Recent projects include the design of two large (27 hop 5.8 GHz
and fifteen hop 2.4/5.8 GHz) spread spectrum networks for
Alberta school divisions and a twelve hop 8 GHz microwave
network in northwestern Ontario.
Design and Implementation of Telephone Systems
Mr. Couprie has designed and implemented many office and
industrial telephone systems that have incorporated incoming
call centers, call management, radio interconnect and
videoconferencing. He has worked with key and PBX systems from
Nortel, Mitel, NEC, Lucent and Toshiba, as well as Telus
Centrex.
Design and Implementation of Videoconference Network
Mr. Couprie was responsible for the design, implementation and
operation of a videoconferencing network that included Polycom
stations in 22 locations and an advanced Lucent video bridge.
Operation and Maintenance
Mr. Couprie was responsible for the operation of the Edmonton
Telephones mobile radio shop for many years. Staff in this shop
installed and maintained all radio systems operated by the City
of Edmonton, as well as other electronic equipment.
