City of Portage la Prairie
Portage's population is 12,976 in 2001. The city uses the
Assiniboine River for it's water source. Company's in the area
are: Co-op fertilizer plant, McCain
Foods Ltd, HI-TECH Industries, Can-Oat Milling, Westco
distribution, Outdoor technologies, and the Food Development
Centre. J.R. Simplot is in the process of constructing a $120
Million French Fry Plant in Rural Portage la Prairie. The city
is accessible by car, truck, bus, train, air,
etc.. Agriculture related processing and services remain the
major industrial focus with the production of many specialty
crops. Portage has seven elementary schools, four junior high
schools and two high schools. Portage has a modern hospital
with
123 beds and 13 doctors. Specializations include: radiology,
internal medicine, orthopaedics, chemotherapy, dialysis,
physical
medicine and rehabilitation, geriatric medicine and obstetrics.
