The CHUL Research Centre has an excellent international reputation in biomedical research. Its mission, among other things, is to ensure a speedy transfer form fundamental discoveries to the diagnosing and treatment of patients.
The publications of its researchers are among the most cited in the world by other scientists, and have gained it interna- tional recognition as a research centre. Annexes to the centre, inaugurated in October 1996, have made it possible to add many new researchers to our staff, making the CHUL Research Centre the biggest biomedical research centre in Canada.
The wide-ranging expertise brought together at our centre has created a unique multidisciplinary institution that can, after having made the discovery of new medications and their chemical synthesis, continue on to a comprehensive study of the properties of new molecules, from their tolerance to the clinical evaluation of their activity.
In concrete terms, discoveries about prostrate cancer have opened up an annual market of one and half billion dollars to pharmaceutical companies and have opened the door to technological transfers through the creation of companies and certain multinational firms.
A high-technology institution, the CHUL Research Centre carries out activities in fundamental research, research and development and clinical research, including molecular endocrinology, human genetics, high blood pressure, infectious diseases, lipidic diseases, family medicine, neuroscience, ontogeny and reproduction, ophthalmology, pediatrics, rheumatology and immunology, environmental health and public health.
In the same vein, the centre is proud to have received, last February, the Fidide Award for 1997 form the Chamber of Commerce of Ste-Foy, in the high-technology category. At the dawn of the 21st century, the CHUL Research Centre is thus confidently moving forward by continuing in its fight against the major health problems of our time.
