Cansolv Technologies Inc. (CTI), was established in 1997 after the purchase of the CANSOLV System Technology from Union Carbide Corporation by key employees involved in the development of the process. The company is focused on the development and licensing of process technologies for the removal, transportation, storage and reuse of sulfur dioxide SO2 and other pollutants from gaseous streams.
Environmental Profile
Cansolv Technologies Inc. (CTI), is a process development and licensing company which markets the CANSOLV System Sulfur Dioxide (SO(2)) Scrubbing Technology. The technology can be applied to flue gas desulfurization, sulfur recovery units and most gaseous process streams in the power generation, refining, natural gas, sulfuric acid, smelter and pulp & paper industries.
The CANSOLV System process was proven during a 9 month demonstration at Suncor Inc.'s Tar Sands Plant in Ft. McMurray, Alberta. The $10 million program showed reliable, easy removal of SO(2) from 6, 000 Nm(3) of flue gas from boilers firing 7% sulfur petroleum coke.
Cansolv Technologies Inc. was established in 1997 after the purchase of the CANSOLV System Technology from Union Carbide Corporation by key employees involved in the development of the process. CTI conducts active, innovative and advanced research on pollution control, sulfur conversion and reuse. Current research programs include Vapor Liquid Equilibria, Electrodialysis, membrane processes, computer process simulation and optimization and de-NOx process development, in state of the art laboratories in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Engineering, procurement and construction services or lump sum plant proposals are provided worldwide. Engineering of pulp mill revamps to incorporate CANSOLV System technology can be provided by Neill and Gunter Ltd. of Fredericton, N. B., Canada.
Cansolv Technologies Inc. supports licensees with technical service and provides process enhancements developed through a highly innovative and aggressive R&D program.

The Cansolv System SO2 removal process. The Cansolv System SO2 removal process is an aqueous amine-based, regenerative gas desulfurization process capable or removing SO2 down to a few ppm, if desired, from most stationary sources. It is flexible, robust, easy to operate and represents an effective solution to regulation-driven market needs and it does so in a manner which vastly improves upon existing desulfurization technologies in terms of physical dimensions, capital and operating costs, and environmental impact. The Cansolv System, can be applied to sulfuric acid and spent acid recovery plants, sulfide or smelters, sulfur recovery units, SO2 production, flue gas desulfurization units and pulp mills.
SO2SAFE Technology for SO2 storage and transport. The storage of sulfur dioxide as a liquid under pressure presents a serious risk due to the possibility of a catastrophic release of SO2. Gaseous SO2 is very toxic, showing adverse health effects at concentrations as low as 3 parts per million. The SO2SAFE Technology mitigates the hazard by dissolving the gas in a high capacity solvent, thereby limiting the release of gaseous SO2 in case of a leak or spill. The SO2 is produced for use as required by regeneration from the solvent in an automated unit. The solvent is recycled after regeneration. The SO2 rich solvent is produced by capturing SO2 from any convenient sources, such as flue gas. In this way, air pollution is prevented and the former pollutant is turned into a valuable chemical. Since fuels of high sulfur content are generally cheaper than low sulfur products, additional economies in fuel cost may also be realized.

The storage of sulfur dioxide (SO2) as a liquid under pressure presents a serious risk due to the possibility of a catastrophic release of SO2 in case of storage vessel or fitting failure. In such a case, while the probability of occurrence is low, the effects are extremely serious. Gaseous SO2 is very toxic, showing adverse health effects at concentrations as low as 3 parts per million. Since SO2 gas is heavier than air, any release will tend to stay at ground level, maximizing human exposure.
The SO2 SAFE( SO2 Storage Technology mitigates the hazard of SO2 by dissolving the gas in a high capacity solvent, thereby limiting the release of gaseous SO2 in case of a leak or spill. The SO2 is produced for use as required by regeneration from the solvent in an automated unit. In this way, the quantity of free SO2 is limited, and therefore the hazard is minimized.
The SO2 SAFE( solvent is recycled after regeneration. The SO2 rich solvent is produced by capturing SO2 from any convenient source, such as flue gas from the burning of sulfur containing fossil fuel. In this way, air pollution is prevented and the former pollutant is turned into a valuable chemical. Since fuels of high sulfur content are generally cheaper than low sulfur products, additional economies in fuel cost may also be realized.
