Canadian Business Resource Centre

The Community Business Resource Centre (CBRC) was established by the George Brown College Foundation in 1989. The CBRC has operated as a private training and consulting organization since 1995. It is managed by a nine-member Board of Directors.

The CBRC is a unique organization which functions as a training
and resource centre for business and economic development. The
Centre operates six services including:
1. Aboriginal Business Consulting and Training Services;
2. Business Advisory Services for New Canadians;
3. Community/Cooperative Enterprise Development;
4. Community Economic Development and Renewal Programs;
5. Entrepreneurship Training Programs;
6. International Development Services.

The CBRC is also a trainer for St. Francis Xavier University's
certificate program in Community Development training and was the
initial sponsor of the Greateeer Toronto Area Community Loan
Fund.

Each year, an estimated 3,000 people participate in the Centre's
training programs, seminars and workshops. 85% of the clients in
CBRC's Self Employment Assistance training programs successfully
start business ventures. Also, the CBRC's entrepreneurship
skills development program for social assistance recipients had
one of the highest success rates in Ontario. In addition, the
CBRC has the highest number of new Canadians who successfully
complete their self-employment training.

During the past five years, the CBRC has assisted in the
establishment of more than 1,000 new small businesses, 20 local
development corporations and development banks and 5 municipal
economic development ventures. All entrepreneurship training
programs offered by the CBRC are recognized by the provincial and
federal governments and the major chartered banks.

Currently, CBRC operates an office at 145 Front Street East,
Suite 101, Toronto with training facilities in Toronto, Barrie
and partner sites around the GTA.

- CBRC's Self Employment Assistance Program has maintained a
business start-up success rate exceeding 80% for 5 years.
- Founding member of Community Economics magazine.
- Established the first sectoral defined entrepreneurship
programs in Ontario (food production, Internet-based
businesses).
- Successfully managed the first two province-wide conferences o
community economic development.
- Published resource book: Starting Your Community Business.
- Established certificate program in Community-based Development
offered by St. Francis Xavier University.
- Founding member of the Digby Partnership (a national
partnership of 14 comunity economic development organizations).
- Established first Internet-based entrepreneurship training
program and community economic development resource centre for
community economic development organizations in Canada (start
