The Canadian Centre for Marine Communications (CCMC) is dedicated to the technical and commercial development of marine products and services using advanced communications, navigation and information technology in co-operation with industry and government.
The CCMC was established in St. Johns, Newfoundland in 1989. Its mandate is to assist Canadian industry in the development of products and services using advanced marine communications, navigation and information technology and to establish strategic partnerships between industry, research centres, academia and government. Canadian companies and organizations direct CCMC and support it through membership.
CCMC assists its industrial partners in the development of new products and services for national and international markets. The commercial success of the partners is the ultimate objective.
CCMC is an initiative of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Industry Canada, and The Fisheries and Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
CCMC operates within three core program areas:
Canadian industry. The objective of the program is to support industry in the development of technologies and applications for the integration of marine communication, navigation and informatics systems.
Under such a model as SmartShip, the field of project activity is determined through industry consultation. CCMC then secures a strategic financial partner to support projects within this field and, through a Request for Proposals back to industry, seeks projects which are championed by industry partners. For many projects, CCMC also provides technical support and access to facilities and equipment.
In the case of SmartShip, the Centre for Information Technology Innovation (CITI) of Montreal has invested $1.0 million, with the expectation of payback on their investment through the sharing with CCMC of royalties on product sales. CCMC then works on behalf of its industry partners to align other strategic partner support. To date, the initial $1.0 million from CITI has been levered to over $6.0 million worth of SmartShip projects.
To facilitate development of SmartShip products, strategic alliances have been formed with Industry Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Transportation Development Centre (TDC), the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and the National Research Council (NRC) through the Institute for Marine Dynamics and the Industrial Research Assistance program.
competitiveness of Canadian marine radio and satellite communication technology and applications in response to market opportunities. The focus is on industry applications that will assist the extension of the information highway to an affordable information seaway.
the new realities in the marine industry. Today more and more ships are considered branch offices of their shorebased counterparts. The InfoMarine program will facilitate the development of the data and information services required under this new reality. The program supports Canadian industry as it faces the challenges and seeks the commercial opportunities surrounding the delivery of marine information technologies.
